The time is right for a Dance Academy renaissance
Which kind of benders do you think the Dance Academy characters would be in the Atla universe? Who would be the Avatar and who would be the non-bender of the group?
Oooooo wait that’s very interesting, let me think…
I think Tara would either be a water bender or a non-bender… because she’s super calm and nice generally, but she has a flow with dancing that I can match with water. Or she could not be a bender, I think she kinda has that vibe too.
Abigail is a fire bender, no doubt. Not much explanation needed, I think.
Kat is either an air bender or a non-bender, I think either one can be because of her love of fun.
Sammy would probably be a non-bender. He just has that vibe.
I think Ollie would either be a earth bender or a fire bender, he’s always passionate and/or stubborn about something.
Grace might be a fire bender. She just has a slightly Azula-like air to her when she’s plotting. But also because her movements are so precise and refined.
Ben would be an air bender, because he’s the golden retriever energy
I think Ethan might be a non-bender, because of how hard he works on things that aren’t focused on his own body. His passion is to be a choreographer, so I can’t really see him bending much
Christian might be a fire bender, or maybe a water bender if you squint. Fire bender because he’s broody, but water bender because of his character arc… like, he has fire bender energy in the beginning, but water bender energy by the end.
And then for the avatar… I might give it to Tara because she’s the main character, but Grace came to mind as well, just because of how strong of a dancer she’s scaled to be.
This was fun to think about! Thank you for the ask!
What are your favorite moments from Dance Academy? We talked about how good the writing is, but what are some of your favorite scenes/moments that stick with you?
Season One:
Most of the moments where we see Abigail struggling with her eating disorder. Because, as a ballerina, that episode in which she talks to the shrink about how she gives her everything to ballet, but doesn’t get much back hits a little too close to home.
I remember that episode was actually the first one I watched as a child. Before it, I had only seem teasers from the show, and it was always the iconic scene where Tara hits her with the pointe shoes, so 10 year old me was like “wait, wasn’t she supposed to be a bitch? Why I feel so much sympathy towards her right now?”
This is also the episode where Sammy convinces her to go to his cha cha class and she dances for fun! She and Sammy are so utterly adorable in season one. Him calling her multiple times when she was recovering, but never managing to talk to her because her mom didn’t allow it and then going to her house, climbing a tree and entering through her window to see her? And watching old black and white movies with her the whole night? That shit was peak romance for pre-teen me and even for today me. Their first kiss is also among my favorite moments.
I also like scenes with Tara dancing and imagining herself flying, or in her “magical place” as she calls. Like in the scene where Ethan literally makes her “fly” or last episode as a whole, with all the building up for her performance as Clara.
Season Two
The dancing scenes are the best, with Sammy’s final dancing and Tara’s version of the red shoes being the most touching ones for obvious reasons. Though I’ll never accept his fate. Even if the whole matter was dealt with utmost sensibility, as everything else in this show. And this includes the scenes where Kat meets the guy who was behind the wheel in season 3.
I also like Abigail’s contemporary solo Last Day on The Earth.
The episode where they compete in the National round of the Prix is particularly amazing. I love that Sammy’s father starts to come around and shows up to support him and I love that he and Tara win first place.
And I love everything to do with Abigail’s musical. That she’s able to stand up to her mom and choose it instead of the Prix, despite all the pressure she was under. I feel like Tara and Sammy are proving their worth as dancers when what Abigail is realizing that she can be more than a dancer if this is what she wants. In the end, she still “chooses” ballet, but she has options.
Season 3
The birthday party. Grace pushing the cake into the pool. Tara diving after it. Iconic.
Everything to do with Christian and Abigail’s friendship. And I mantain that Sammy didn’t need to die for them to find things in common and go to drag shows together.
Also her videoclipe with Ollie. And their short lived music duo. But to be honest, I’m glad they chose the Company in the end.
Kat’s movie. Everything to do with it. I’d love to watch it. It seems extremely camp.
I also like how start to give hints that there’s more to Grace than just being the chaotic girl who loves to cause problems. And how she connects with Ben, despite him being an idiot who only has eyes for that Tara. The tour was very fun, at least for their scenes. I love how relaxed everyone was, except Zach.
And have I mentioned the moment where Abigail and Ollie get their contracts? I almost cried with Abby.
Now you tell me your favorites.
oh my gosh- i also love dance academy! i was wondering your thoughts on ethan karamakov as a bf? thank you!
OH FUCKING BOY. First of all, yes. Season 1 Ethan is very different from seasons 2 and 3 Ethan bc he actually had a shit load of character development. In general though, Ethan has had a lot of practice at getting girls to fall for him. like a lot. like a nauseating amount /j but there are two things that really set you apart from his past flings. first of all, you didn't start out as friends with Kat, Ethan met you on his own terms. second, you really didn't fall for a lot of his games like other girls have. similarly to Logan Huntzberger, he's surprised when you treat your relationship as casually as he does. he's intrigued even. but what really gets Ethan to wake the fuck up and realize what a catch you are, how much he likes you and wants to hold onto you, is when he realizes that you're seeing other people too. he sees some guy from third year that he doesn't really know that well chatting you up, touching your arm and making you laugh. and he does not like it. not one bit. so when you show up to workshop the dance he's been choreographing as promised Ethan simply cannot focus on the steps or what a perfect choice you are. he thinks he can keep it together, but he's already letting his feelings slip out when you're warming up.
"So, you and Darren, huh?"
he thinks it sounds casual enough, but you see right through him (which is one of the reasons you're so perfect for him) so of course you just laugh.
"Ethan Karamakov," you chuckle, looking up at him, "are you jealous?"
he gets all blustery and denies it, but by the time you're done going over the choreo he's insisting you both stop seeing other people, and planning a proper date to take you out on this weekend, and the rest is history. and let me tell you, even though this is his first proper relationship, Ethan falls hard and fast for you. he gets so invested in you, in being the best boyfriend he possibly can. He really, really wants to do a good job, and it shows. what Ethan starts to realize what he loves so much about you is that you really don't scare easy. you're such a stable, consistent presence in his life, and it's something that means more to him than he can even describe. he gets so scared that Natasha or his dad will scare you off, but not even his... interesting family can do that. and full disclosure, Kat will probably not like you much at first, only because she doesn't want to fall into the pattern of getting attached to one of Ethan's girlfriends then having them leave when he acts like an asshole. but once she sees that Ethan is actually trying, that he's trying to be a better boyfriend, better brother, better person, when Kat sees that it looks like you're actually around to stay and not going flake at the first sign of trouble???? Congradulations, you now have both of the Karamakov siblings attached to you at the hip. Kat will periodically requisition you for much needed spur of the moment girl's days/shopping sprees (usually when her mom flakes), so now it's Ethan's turn to find out what it feels like to be stood up for a date. you barely have time to explain when Kat takes your phone out of your hand.
"uh yeah, Ethan? there's a sale so I'm stealing your girlfriend - who is waaaay out of your league, by the way-"
"Okay, thanks for that, Kat."
"anyway, you'll get her back later! bye-"
And under other circumstances sure, it would suck to be canceled on last minute, but it actually makes Ethan really happy when those days do happen. knowing that Kat is getting to spend time with someone who's both a positive influence AND is somewhat stable gives him a lot of peace of mind. besides, if Kat approves of you, he knows there must be something... real between you. and something real like that doesn't come around too often. he knows from experience.
Rewatching Dance Academy is sending me through the whirlwind of that HUGE crush I had on Ethan Karamakov when the show started.
I was IN LOVE, proving the show did a good job with Tara because I felt as swept up in his charm as she did.
