subsistence hunting is technically also ethically sourcing your meat - no factory involved, no production line, just a handful of people in the bush. it's as old as humanity and harms an absolutely minimal amount of wildlife when done correctly.
one buck (male deer) will get you 72 lbs of meat. (UW study). that is not counting the hide, the bones, the hooves etc which can all be used if one knows how (also raw fresh deer is excellent dog food, on-bone, and keeps them shiny)
"oh but we don't have to"
no, but it's a lot less harmful and impactful. also meat is extremely expensive
are you calling every culture in the world barbaric? really?
"but it hurts the animal"
yes? i'm sorry. this is how meat works. the world isn't fair or nice. and if you don't eat meat, don't! but most people do (nobody knows exactly but it hovers around 85-90% meat eaters) and many get it from animals in really upsetting, inhumane conditions, and most do not have a choice. if more of the world hunted ethically, only taking what they needed and redistributing the rest, many would eat tonight.
when handled well, meat from deer, elk, moose, wild boar, rabbit, hare, and bison is all nutritious and suitable for all ages! we are omnivores and it's not weird.
i can't eat rabbit anymore - it turns my stomach - but it was that or starving, more than once. bison is also delicious and good for anemics, buy it from native ranchers and hunters when possible.
