Misir Wot

i wanted to share one of my favourite easy recipes

recipe is below

1 cup dried red lentils

oil

1 1/2 yellow onions, finely chopped

1 tbs berbere (or more)

1 small can tomato paste (140 g possibly)

1 tbs ginger purée

1 tbs garlic purée

salt

boil lentils in water until lentils disintegrate (around 30 minutes) (this can be done the day before)

heat oil. cook onions (with salt) for 5 minutes

add berbere and purées and cook for 5 minutes

add tomato paste

mix in cooked lentils

i hope you enjoy. if you can’t get berbere (will be at your local Ethiopian grocer or bakery), you will need to find a recipe for the spice mix and make it yourself, or will need to find a good substitution somewhere. it is best eaten with injera.

this is not my recipe and is written on a queue card at my house with no source. it is probably copied from a family friend or from a newspaper (most likely The Age) or from another magazine

A young Ethiopian (as Africans were known in ancient Greece) stands in the pose and garb of a Greek philosopher. He wears a knee length himation, wrapped around his left arm and his clenched left fist. His right hand once held something–a scroll? Perhaps he represents a young student who had come to a great Hellenistic city, Alexandria? This very fine statuette is a rare example of the integration of Africans into cosmopolitan Greek society.
