Father
Eva squirmed in her bed, the noises echoing from her mouth filled her room as she had yet another nightmare, her eyes sprung open and she gasped as she flung forward. It was the same as the others, alone and on a beach waiting for someone to find her again.
She rested her hand on her face and slowly brushed the tears away like it was part of her daily routine, she glared as the little bubbles of emotion dripped off her palm and onto the sheets. The sun shone through the window and into the room, lighting the area beautifully. Eva slowly pushed herself off of the bed and slowly walked to the window and gazed out, it was truly a pleasant sight, but she held no reason to care today, because today was not one she was eager to endure.
Today, Eva's father had come to Japan to visit.
She saw him at the entrance, dressed like a typical British tourist in Jeans and a T-shirt, you could spot him a mile off. He waved at his little girl as she silently walked towards him almost like a robot, the sun made her hair glisten gold and she looked almost like an angel to her father. "Evaaaa!!!" he screamed as students in the area gazed in confusion, she could feel the students mocking her and it made her frown. The girl stood to face him with a vacant expression, her father smiled at her before speaking the words she hated to hear "You've grown my little princess!"
Eva's face almost erupted as she glared into his eyes "I'm not your princess"
Immediately he burst into laughter before petting Eva's head "It's okay darlin' daddy was just foolin' around" she pushed his hand aside before walking forward and getting into the taxi at the road, her father stayed facing the school for a little bit, he wiped a stray tear from his face before slowly turning and following Eva into the vehicle. The destination was already set by her father so they began moving shortly after entering.
Eva gazed out the window mindlessly as her father watched her. "uh.. don't you wanna know where we're go-"
"I don't care"
"Don't be like that my lil' princess.." He thought for a minute "Y-You know my love for you is...Eva-lasting" He erupted into laughter as she slowly turned her head to him with an almost rage filled face. "I-It was just a joke Eva.. geez" she returned to her position at the window as her father looked forward, the driver's eyes reflected in the mirror back at him, and he was rocking his head side to side with a frown on his face. "So.. how is school? you made any.. friends?"
Eva stayed silent and ignored him. "How about I stop calling you princess.. will you answer then?"
"It's boring, the lessons suck and everyone there is a tool"
Her father frowned "Oh.. I thought this school would be nice for you.. seeing as every other school in England wasn't good enough for you"
"Are you mad at me?" She asked, a dull tone in her voice.
"N-No! of course not.. I didn't mean that at all!!.. I just.. worry about you"
"Don't bother I can take care of myself thanks"
Silence filled the air as he just stared at her more, he couldn't fathom how to get through to her at all at the moment. Eva was more in a state of boredom than anything, she didn't like her father at all, he got rid of her rabbit after all and shouted at her a lot back in England, he may have been trying to be nice but it didn't seem legitimate to her.
He put on a false smile and leaned in, tapping her shoulder before whispering “Any cute boys?” Her face turned to him in complete horror, it was possibly the creepiest thing he’d ever done. “Er… no..” She did think about some of the boys briefly before concluding that in fact none of them were too appealing. Darian was nice but he was clearly interested in Takashi, she’d never really spoken to Kailen, Masaru was possibly one of the worst people she’d ever met and Takashi, a small smile erupted on her face causing her father to lean in further “Who is it?” She turned and screamed causing the driver to rock the car in fear “Y-you okay back there?!”
“Er yeah sorry, my daughter.. er.. saw a spider!” he turned to face hers, she was practically snarling at him whenever he spoke.
The remaining ten minutes of the car journey was literally just silence, the taxi pulled over and the two of them got out. “We have to walk a little bit if that’s okay darlin’?” she didn’t reply, so he just walked on ahead of her. Eva trailed behind like a dog, rather than staying by his side. Her father proceeded to wipe his eyes yet again, trying not to let them run free in front of Eva. “You’ll like this place; I looked it up on the internet on the plane y’know!” He turned and smiled, only to see she was facing down as usual “Be careful! Make sure you don’t bump into people with your head down like that!” That almost made Eva giggle, she’d already bumped into many people that way already.
She looked on as her father made a final turning; Eva followed and was met with a building when she caught up, her father was holding the door open for her. She walked in slowly and saw an old lady greeting her with a handshake, Eva reached out awkwardly and fulfilled it “You must be the little Eva girl your father spoke about!” Eva nodded before turning to her dad in confusion, a quizzical look was presented on her face. The lady tugged on Eva’s arm and pointed at a nearby door, “It’s just in that room deary!” The girl remained confused. He’d clearly brought something for her to be a peace offering or something, a new TV or some materials most likely, something that’d be a shallow attempt to get her love. She frowned and rushed around the corner, she stopped when she entered.. and covered her mouth with her hands, her eyes glimmering. What sat in the middle of the room, as fluffy as can be, was a little white rabbit.
Her father walked into the room and rested his hand on her shoulder “It’s yours now Eva” She swiftly turned to him in shock, she didn't know how to respond at all. “Go and pet it girl!” Eva nodded and quickly reached down to pet the bunny, a smile began to show on her face as she repeatedly stroked the cute little rabbit, she picked it up and hugged it close, nuzzling her face into its fur. Her father bent down next to her and glanced over her shoulder “It’s a cutie innit? Just like you” Eva looked over at him before realising.
“But.. I can’t keep it in my dorm.. how will..”
“Shhh! It’s okay Eva.. this wasn’t a return flight y’know” Eva’s eyes widened as she gazed at her father, what did he mean. “You know me and your mother don’t see eye to eye much anymore, and well I didn’t want to hang around there so.. I took up a job opportunity in Japan.. I want to stay with you Eva” Eva was absolutely speechless, she never thought her father would make such a sacrifice to be with her. “I.. well.. to tell the truth.. I know we fall out.. but I couldn’t bear you being so far away anymore Eva.. I.. love you so much.. I know you hate it but you are my little princess okay, and you always will be.. and I am so so-“ he was interrupted by Eva thrusting herself into his arms; crying as she tugged on his shirt with one arm and held the bunny with the other. “Sorry I got rid of the other rabbit.. I wanted.. to apologize this way” Eva cried into his shirt as she aggressively hugged him, she couldn’t stop her emotions from showing anymore “I-I love you dad” Her father stared at her, those words were words he hadn’t heard for years, and he couldn’t even handle the fact that she’s said them again. He reached out and pulled Eva closer to him and whispered “I always loved you, even when we fell out, I always loved you even when you’d come home with bad grades, I always loved you and always will princess, okay?” The old lady then entered the room with a tray of tea and biscuits for them both. "awww you all look adorable"
They accepted the tea and chatted with the lady for a while before she left the room for a few minutes. They had sat down now next to each other, Eva held the bunny close. “H-How are we going to keep it dad?..”
“Well I’ve got a place in the city to stay now, I wish you could too but it’s a one room apartment. But you can visit me and the bunny any time you want Eva” He smiled.
“Thank you dad, thank you so much I really mean it” She sniffled as she tried to hold the tears back.
“Hey now don’t you go crying again! It went everywhere okay!. Now I want you to know, if you ever feel upset at school or feel like you wanna stay with me for a while.. well.. I’ll always have a couch for you at my place”
Eva smiled at him, and stroked her hair back over her ear “Thanks dad”
“Now, you gotta name for the little guy yet?”
“I think.. it’s not a common one but maybe.. Takashi..”
Her father smiled and petted her hair, she playfully snarled at him. “It’s a nice name for a bunny that’s for sure!”
Eva smiled “Yeah.. it is”
End.
