this fic is a quasi-prequel to evasive maneuvers, in the sense that it doesn't exactly line up with all the details of the original (mostly just because i wrote evasive maneuvers first). it should retain the same vibes and — other than a few references to birdie-reader and rocket's shared history in evasive maneuvers and the fact that rocket's gonna do all sorts of terrible things to her sooner in birdie — it should feel more-or-less cohesive.

Ortegas is so good at evasive maneuvers generations of Starfleet captains will demand them, but as far as I can recall Ortegas is the only one who creates original patterns that deviate from the standard ones...and IIRC the only Trek pilot to actually evade hazards with evasive maneuvers.
