And Now For the Wrap.... Augusta Auctions March 28th

I don’t collect vintage clothes on purpose because I cannot possibly create the conditions of a museum collection space where the humidity and the temperature are set just so. But that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy ogling an online vintage clothing auction like the one that Augusta Auctions will have online on March 28th.

I have been indulging in some distractions (in between learning how to shift college teaching to an online format), by pondering my outfit for a fall family wedding. Look at the earlier blogs for the dresses in the running. And of course, one will need a wrap, in case it gets cold, or simply because they can be that crowning touch on an outfit. I am old enough and calm enough to handle long stoles well, and I own several in silks and alpacas, but there is always the possibility of a bolero or capelette which are also very good for the high energy of a younger woman.

Here you see 3 from the 1930s, a time when evening gowns went long while day dresses stayed at lower calf. The first time in northern Atlantic history where there was a hemline difference (the 1920s brought up the hemlines of all dresses, peaking in mid decade at the knee or even above). Topping evening gowns with a special jacket or wrap of some kind was already a venerable tradition. I begin with a pink cape which is beaded in white and gray into a kind of butterfly motif. The closeup photo shows how the grey beads divide the panels and then a vermicelli or squiggle motif takes up the panels. Stunning. Then, you see a mini (so tiny!) bolero in silver sequins. Look at the image with the arms extended and you realize it has a flared sleeve that is tiered. Lastly, a black cape cut asymmetrically with a higher neck and bands of silver sequins on net at the lower edge. Such variety, such creativity in these three. They really do put my simple stole in the shade. I will have to ponder the possibilities which appear to be limitless.

The Genius of Christian Dior: Golden Evening Dress from 1953

I recently gave a talk on how France exported fashion to the United States an the amazing success of Maison Dior in both exporting and licensing. We forget how short a time Dior was there to run his house. He opened it in 1946 and died in 1957, but in that short time, he made an impression that was indelible. This evening dress and stole in ribbed silk moiré is part of the collection at the Chicago History Museum. It is strapless so the fitted fitted bodice has boning to keep it up. What is amazing is the stole which has a buttonhold over the left breast then a short sleeve on the right side and then wraps around the back of the shoulders, over the left shoulder to fall down in front and there is a hidden hook and eye to attach the stole to the bodice above the left breast. I have never seen such a stole before and it surely pleased the woman who didn’t like to play with her stole except to take it off. The skirt is long and pleated, and you can see from the last image that tiers underneath make it for the fullness you see at the hip line of the skirt. It must have made for a grand entrance

Pretty Party Wear and Purses: Vogue Patterns Magazine, Dec ‘17 - Jan ‘18

As you can see from top photos, it is time to start in on party clothing. That pretty little shoulder wrap V 9291, a gathered fluff of organza closed with a rhinestone buckle is part of a multi wrap pattern by Kathryn Brenne. The off-the-shoulder tunic is made in a metallic knit is a Very Easy Very Vogue 9281 and I cannot be the only one thinking that trimming the top band with with stretchy velvet or fur would make it extra cozy. The purple cape bottom left is Very Easy Very Vogue 9288 in case you want something more in the military mood.

The entire direction for making that pretty evening purse are included, plus an article by Linda Turner Griepentrog explains all you need to know to draft simple patterns for making framed purses and finishing them. There are more technical articles, one on embellishing coats by Sandra Betzina and one on making silk pajamas by Kathryn Brenne. Plus Claire Schaeffer explains how to to a couture waistband. There are no patterns included, but the technical articles are becoming more and more valuable.

Vogue Patterns Magazine, October/November 2017

The new patterns for fall and the new Vogue Patterns Magazine are out, so put away those cottons, and start thinking wool if you leave in a climate where it is about to get cool.

There are lots of technical features from the simple to the complex, for beginners to expert dressmakers. This issue features a short, but very useful article by Claire Schaeffer on mitering corners, the machine-sewing way and then the couture way which more painstaking, of course. Then there is a creative article by Linda Turner Griepentrog on making lace, which is not actual lace, but machine embroidery that resembles lace, either traditional motifs, or more free-forms ones like the picture in the middle of the threesome above. Kathryn Breene offers a long technical article on melding leather to fabric through needle-felting, see the dark violet coat on the left of the threesome above. She also writes an accompanying article on hardware, and I mean hardware as in a hardware store, such as an anvil, which she uses on coats and bags.

Then there are the pattern photos, so you can see what you want to put on your shopping list for this fall. At top you see Vogue 9276, TaFa’s sheer fuschia wrap, it is one of four options, and wraps are both useful and charming over evening dresses, and yes, you will want them as they offer you some variety, some coverage, and in sheer wools, some warmth as well. Make do with one nice evening dress and add a bevy of wraps. The wraps are easier to make than dresses and allow you to play with all the luxurious fabrics in small quantities: laces, metallics, sheers. Or stay warm with sleeves, as in the stretch velvet dress in green, Vogue 9264. Then there is a new designer to Vogue Patterns, Julio Cesar who takes a shirt dress and adds subtly harmonizing appliques. Fans of the work of Koos van den Akker will recognize that Cesar worked in his studio before striking out on his own.
