sorry to keep bringing up Adorno & Horkheimer on this blog but in the culture industry they talk about how genre itself under capitalism becomes its own product, this reproducible standardised form that is materially analogous to a standardised widget produced on a factory floor. And I think AO3 helps centralise this standardisation process for tropes-as-tags. Obviously things like omegaverse, fuck-or-die, 5+1 etc are all already standardised ‘forms,’ fandom events and zines and so on all preceded AO3, but idk if they were ever as consolidated + infrastructurally maintained and standardised (as in site architecture) in one space as they are now, and I SUSPECT that leads to changes in how fandom is arranged and engaged with
