Every Falling Star - Sneak Peek
Vers is halfway to her feet when something cold and hard pushes against the back of her head.
“Turn around.” A woman’s voice, clipped and commanding. Each word is laced with threat. “Hands where I can see them.”
Vers complies, slow and deliberate. Raising her hands, palms facing outward, she tries to make herself smaller than she is. Inside, she’s an amalgam of shock and chagrin in equal parts: it’s the first time someone managed to sneak up on her since she was allowed to wear a Starforce uniform and Vers doesn’t know whether she ought to be incensed about it or impressed.
I mean no harm to you, I’m- The words never make it out of her mouth. A sleek-looking pistol is aimed at her face. Even as the training hard-wired into her by years of grueling wars urges her to rip the weapon from its owner’s hand - possibly along with the hand itself - Vers freezes.
She sees herself, much in the same situation, but wearing a uniform she doesn’t recognize. A flight suit, olive green, but the flash of memory is gone before she can make out the badge sewn on one sleeve. There had been a bird on it, she thinks, but not a species inhabiting the worlds controlled by the Kree.
“Carol?”
