1323 – Day 2 – Chevalier Home
They had been so excited when they found out that Elisaria was expecting their first child.
It had seemed like a miracle to Robert. People have babies all the time, but this would be his child, he had thought. A tiny little mixture of himself and Elisaria. Maybe a little boy with her golden hair that he could teach to hunt and fight, or a precious little girl with Elisaria’s warm brown eyes and sweet disposition. He had seen how happy his brothers were with their children and had wanted the same.
And then Elisaria’s labour had stretched on and on, with him outside the house, hearing her weakening screams. In all his life, he has never been more afraid.
Luckily, she has survived, although it has taken her days to even be able to rise out of bed. Their little boy hasn’t been so lucky.
He hasn’t gotten enough air, the midwife tells him. The birth has simply taken too long and has suffocated him.
It doesn’t matter. What matters is that their sweet little boy will never get to live.
He does his best to comfort his wife, who is devastated and angry by turns. He is in pain himself, but he swallows it as best he can. She needs him to be strong now, and if he can’t bring back their boy, he can at least give her that.
