The writing of today's captain log is demoralizing to the one that reads it. After days of constant disappearances, and inexplicable event, the last men standing on the Demeter have given up. All of them, from the captain to the last two crew members, are now waiting for their terrible doom.

Even the first mate, who has been a constant annoyed and horrible person to work with is demoralized, as if he now realized that these are the last days of his life.

The captain writes that the last two crew members keep working patiently because there is still work to do. They have already made peace that they are going to die, yet they still complete their work. There has been two days of fog in a part of the route where they could have called for help.

To the captain of the Demeter, hats off to you for trying to do your job. He could have done some things better, and he could have done things differently, but the fate of the ship was sealed when those coffins were brought abroad.
