Everything Is Normal AU: Where nothing goes wrong and they all just work together at their mildly strange job

Mechas don't exist and they live normal lives. It's summer and the NGE characters finally go to a holiday stay at the beach?

I was going to try to find a way to make this post-apocalyptic but that is so far removed from the spirit of this ask that I repented of my ways and will stick to a nice, normal au.

The one thing both aus have in common is that Kaji is providing watermelons. And that's really as far as I got with the apocalypse one before I quit being a turd and switched over to doing what you asked for lol.

We already know how lethal Asuka in a bikini is for Shinji, and that she's not above using swim suit shopping to try to entice hotties, so pre-beach trip I think she contrives to have Shinji help her pick out a new suit.

He is, of course, a stammering mess the whole time.

But let's say that Asuka, in an effort to make it seem like she's not specifically trying to allure Shinji, also invites Rei, thinking she will refuse.

Alas, she does not refuse, so now Shinji is swimsuit shopping with two girls and Asuka is fuming because this was not what she planned.

To her great relief, the swimsuit Rei chooses is a wet suit because she gets cold easily and burns like a marshmallow in the sun.

Kensuke and Toji act like absolute morons about Shinji helping Asuka pick out her bikini.

The boys have a swimming race. Kensuke gets a stitch in his side and can't get back from the deep water. Rei swims out to save him and everyone discovers she's life guard trained, which pisses Asuka off, so she goes hunting for lifeguard training classes.

Somehow everyone is now getting lifeguard trained while Misato and Kaji barbecue and Ritsuko lies on her beach towel making passive aggressive comments about whether or not they're dating.

Asuka has a wardrobe malfunction during the final lifeguard training exam and Shinji has to help her tie her top on. He is not able to get out of the water to accept his lifeguard diploma for several minutes because his hand brushed her side boob and also her naked back.

Everyone enjoys the barbecue.

They have a bonfire and toast marshmallows. Toji plays the one guitar song he knows on repeat for an hour before Kaji takes the guitar away and plays instead.

On the drive home, Rei falls asleep on Shinji's shoulder so Asuka does, too, but better.

She was part of the killer clown thing from a decade ago, because of course she was. And Danny’s alive and well, he just can’t go to circuses anymore. Funnily enough, he and literally everyone else get along pretty well with Nikola. Only Tim has beef with her.

Everything Is Normal AU: Jude (and Agnes)

Jude is the baker at Agnes’s cafe, right down the street from the Institute. No one really knows how they got the matching scars and they’re too afraid to ask. Despite how often their shop lights on fire, they have a pretty good life and a healthy marriage.

(They also may have escaped a cult to get here.)
