i read a post about Vincent being a manipulative and somewhat an evil character (considering his behavior towards Diedrich etc.) ; plus seems to me that he didn't really care for O!Ciel as much, thoughts?

Idk which post you mean. However, the post might have simply been about his role as Queen’s Watchdog and his inclusion in the Aristocrats of Evil, or Evil Nobles. These positions essentially require quite the evil streak and a manipulative nature... and a fair share of training to make the most of these traits.

He was raised to take his mother’s place, though I should think he wasn’t feeling quite ready for the task by 15, when it all passed over to him. We know Undertaker and Diedrich were early members of his inner circle, and they seem to have partly served as advisors, not simply people doing his bidding. However, Yana-san has said that one’s evil streak is mostly brought out by one’s parents/guardians/caretakers... then added the fact that Tanaka largely raised Vincent. Of course, that makes me wonder just how big a hand Undertaker might have actually had in raising Vincent, too.... Just how well did Vincent know Undertaker? What did Vincent know of his own father, Cedric? 😉

To your other question, I’ll point out that Yana-san has also stated Vincent truly loved his family. That includes our earl/our Ciel. But, she says, Vincent was a man of his time, too; he wasn’t around his children as much as Rachel, Madam Red, Tanaka, etc. Consider: he really only needs one smart, strong, and well-trained (to the best of his abilities) heir, but he ended up with twin boys... and the younger of the two is also intelligent, but proves ailing and shy. It’s not that he doesn’t care for our earl/our Ciel. He does. He just doesn’t have the same expectations (future titles, responsibilities, physicality, sociability, etc.) for him, so he might come across as a bit more aloof towards him.
