Magneto’s brisk steps echoed down the metal-floored hallways of his base. He was in an excellent mood today. He’d received word from Mystique that she was in position in the American capitol; that meant that their plans were preceding ahead of schedule. That margin of time might give them the edge they needed to win this war.

Especially since, for once, Charles would not be able to interfere.

A sweeping gesture unlocked the outer door. Magneto shut it behind him and made sure his helmet was securely on his head before opening the inner door.

The complicated mechanism of the door (openable only by Magneto) scraped open, revealing a small but comfortable room. Erik had made sure to keep Charles in better conditions than the humans had kept Erik. The new rulers of the world, he thought to himself, would be better than the last.

He set down a metal platter on the little table in the center of the room, and smiled at Charles. “How are you feeling today, my friend?”

charles didn’t protest to the pull, not feeling he was currently in any danger. this was one of erik’s more peaceful moments and charles wasn’t about to ruin it.

He let go of Charles’ wrist and pulled up a chair across from him, sitting down. ❝It may not be to your liking.❞ He ran a finger across the scar. ❝It was a long time ago. Do you remember, Charles, what it was like to be young and angry?❞

He didn’t miss the anger. These days, he was in control of his emotions. Everything was distant and cold and safe, viewing the world as if he was an impartial, amused observer. ❝Life was so immediate. Everyone thinks they are going to change the world when they’re young. But we did.❞
