Hi Fr, could you explain the difference between a priest who has left the priesthood but remains a devout Catholic and a married person who leaves a marriage without an annulment but also wants to remain a devout Catholic. The ex-priest would be allowed to receive the Eucharist but the separated person would not be able to. I was curious as to the reason why. Thanks Fr.
An excellent question. A married person who has to separate from their spouse, if it's done for the right reasons (especially in cases of domestic violence) isn't in sin. (Note: It's always good to consult in-depth with a priest before doing so, since it's such a dramatic decision, even if only temporary.)The "So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate" of Matthew 19:6 clearly refers in context to the permanent separation of divorce, not to a separation that is intended to be hopefully temporary. The real issue is divorce and remarriage, which creates a situation of de facto adultery if the first marriage hasn't been annulled. Though an analogy between marriage and priesthood is commonly made, there isn't a 100% correspondence between the "one flesh" no-separation that marriage implies and what priesthood is in its nature.I hope that helps... God bless you! - Father Shane
A former Catholic priest, expelled from the ministry over child sexual abuse allegations, now holds a position with TSA at Philadelphia International Airport.
Thomas Harkins, the former priest, was observed working in a highly-frequented area in the airport by the CBS Philadelphia's I-Team.
Harkins reportedly works between Terminals D and E, a busy area of the airport that sees thousands of people, including young children, pass through each day.
