Follow-up to that poll:
I like turn based games so much that every OC of mine gets their own custom RPG-style classes, even if they'd never realistically need to fight in what I consider their "home" setting. I tend to treat them kind of like action figures - I can pick them up and place them in whatever kind of story I want. Their home setting is supposed to be a peaceful place, but even then, sometimes I come up with a class first and build the character around that. For example, I once designed a class where the main function was being better than others at using items - healing items heal more HP when used by this class, they also have the option to halve an item's effectiveness to make it hit everyone instead of one person, stuff like that. Once the character I designed for that class was done and I wanted to put her into the more peaceful setting, I figured that if she's good at using items, she'd probably be carrying a lot of them, and if she's good at carrying a lot of things, maybe she'd have a job that required that of her, so now she's a mail carrier within that setting

found the quote i was thinking of (yes i used goodreads to find it instead of looking in my physical copy because my physical copy is in the box set of the first three books and i didn't want to get it out right now) but here.
emphasis (bold) added.
“Because hope is a knife that can cut through the foundations of the world," said Sumi. Her voice was suddenly crystalline and clear, with none of her prior whimsy. She looked at Nancy with calm, steady eyes. "Hope hurts. That's what you need to learn, and fast, if you don't want it to cut you open from the inside out. Hope is bad. Hope means you keep on holding to things that won't ever be so again, and so you bleed an inch at a time until there's nothing left. Ely-Eleanor is always saying 'don't use this word' and 'don't use that word,' but she never bans the ones that really bad. She never bans hope.”
- Seanan McGuire, Every Heart A Doorway
I just. I love this line anyway, it sticks with me, I think I've brought it up here somewhere before but like. I keep thinking about it. another context now.
Particularly within the context of hope/despair.
Anyway I highly recommend the book - it's the first book in the Wayward Children series, and I highly recommend all of them.
(I also recommend Seanan's tumblr, which I followed for a while before finding out that yes, she is actually a prolific author. So like. Our other resident author cryptid.)
