Day 10/100. The art paper went well. My friend baked me some brownies. I attended a dog's birthday party with my dog. And then assembled a gift to send to my German exchange buddy. And now I'm painting a postcard to go in it. The farewell is tomorrow and the theme is Wanderlust. I haven't studied today because I just got done with my exams and I needed a break. Dogs are too good for us. We don't deserve such pure creatures.

Travel/Study/Exchange Student Blog

Hiya lovelies! I am so excited to announce that this Kiwi girl will be attending the University of Manchester in September to do a student exchange!! So, I’ve decided to write all about it here. There’ll be weekly ‘diary entries’, photos, and advice for any of those who need it! This will begin around the first week of September as I won’t be flying out of NZ until the 13th. I would love it if those of you interested in this sort of thing would give me a follow (I’ll follow you back!) so I can get this started. I’m super hyped about going on exchange and having the chance to travel around Europe and I would love to share my experiences with you all (and any advice you would like in regards to planning an exchange/ how I find doing an exchange programme).

Where to live?

Finding home in a foreign country

Finding a place in Paris was one of the most exahusting expriences I have ever lived. Owners who don't reply or if they do, they reply with "I'm sorry, I only rent for people who stay for a year". Phoning Paris, owners who hang up because they don't understand you, getting frustrated because you can't have a coherent conversation. Real estate agencies, some reply after a week, some change the contract without notifing you, some who only are intrested in "sign and payment", no room for questions.

When I decided to go on an exchange programme, I igonred all of this. But, its just not easy: apartments in Paris are expensive, small and old. Depending on where you search some dont have heater or Internet (which are esencial); finding a place for two is also dificult (and more expensive of course); many of them near the Periphery (place which i have not been recomended). Days went by and the time for boarding the plane was getting nearer and still, I needed my visa (which requires a residence in France).

Every person I saw i told them about this oddesy, hoping that perhaps, they could help me; and thats how I mobilized a huge contact network: ambassadors, ex alumnis from my University who are there at the moment, friends of friends, friends of parents...Everyone recomended me web pages "write here! and there! do this!". But still, it seemed impossible. March, april, may, june; nothing. Everyday I checked the web, real estate agiences, Airbnb (with its dreadful warning: only 1% of the aparments are available at the moment for your dates), which was a reminder of the little time I had left.

Only remained the old ones, expensives, with the least of commodities, the most far away from my univeristy. I even dreamnt with them: ¡the emails i sent and their answers! It was an awful process, to the extent where I asked myself if I really wanted to do this: tired of Paris, of the french language, of the apartments, of the documents needed (Passport, letter of admision, proof of living, proof of income, etc)...

But still, I needed a place to live, I couldn't sleep in Notre Dame or in a bridge over the Sena, so thats why I kept searching until I found it...

Apparments in Paris are expensive, and in most cases a studio is not below 800 euros, however some lucky ones have found studios por 700 euros.

There are other options as well: estudient residences and colocataires (shared rooms). Still, one does not need to fool themselves: its true they are more chepaer, but in some cases, not too cheap either. I saw rooms in student residences por 830 euros per month and colocataires for 750 euros per month. However it is true that as the date to begin the semester draws nearer, only the most expensive ones remain. If one searchs in advance, they may find a room on a estudent residence.

What I learned:

Time: search in advance. Apartments in Paris are on high demand.

¿Alone or shared?: Define this as soon as possoble. Personally, I found it much easier search for myself than for me and someone else (and I say this because at first,  I was going to live with someone else). At times, I felt I was tied to the person and made the process much slower.

¿What type of residence?: Colocataires, student residence, studio..To be honest, I did not know about this other options, but they are worth taking them into account.

Expenses: plan a budget, however, in this process you will spend a lot!

Warning: real state agiences demand a fee for their service (which is payed only once) + the first month of rent in advance + insurance

Positive: Real State agencies have staff who can speak more than one language. I was able to find staff who spoke my language and made the process much more easier. Also, the fear of being ripped off disapears when treating with a real state agiency (however I did speak to others in advance and asked them about their expeirence). Specially Lodgis has a very fast reply rate.

Negative: Some real state agiences took long to reply. It happened to me that I told my advisor I had on my priority list one apartment in particular, and the person talked to the owner of another aprtment. And, the higher costs.

Some Univeristies offer a forum in their cites for their international students (at least my University, Sciences Po does that).

Warning: Student residneces are on high demand, in june, most of them are full. Just like Airbnb, as time goes by, the ones left are the most expensive.

Positive: Can be cheaper. Airbnb doesnt ask for a service fee. In most cases, you talk  with the owner directly, while in real state agiences you only have contact with the owner once the contract is signed.

Negatives: Fraud. Sciences Po does offer a forum, however they warn you that in case of fraud they are not responsable.

Today is the 20th of August 2015 and on this day, last year, I was on my way to Denmark for the adventure of a life time.

My body was full of a concoction of emotions and thoughts. ‘Will people like me?’ ‘Will I have friends?’ ‘What if I hate it?’ etc. I was lucky enough to have had my beautiful sister with me, to help me settle in (aka force me to leave the house and make friends). We traveled to Copenhagen with 2 seriously heavy bags full of clothes and shoes and stayed in a fabulous hotel. 

Arriving in Denmark was a crazy experience, it was like no other country that I had ever been to, the people were so beautiful and well dressed and it was busy but not as busy as the other capital cities that I had ever been to. 

While I was fearful about moving to a new country, I was also excited for a fresh start and a chance to make new friends. I was kinda tired of the same old thing at my home university. I had so many expectations (good and bad) but I embraced it and I MADE IT WHAT I WANTED IT TO BE (Remember its truly what you make it) and as a result I had a great time. 

I’m so sorry that this has been a short and not-very-good post, I had to have minor surgery on my left had so I had to type with one hand and I’m also on some antibiotics and pain killers (which are not doing anything for the pain (help me Jesus))

I love you guys, thank you for reading my tumblog! You’re all amazing.

Highlight: 10 October 2014

As part of my study abroad highlight series, I’m gonna go back and remember some of the best memories I have of my time in Denmark.

On this day, my beautiful Aussie friend and I, Jules, went to what was the closest thing to a law ball. The most fun part was actually getting ready. Doing our make up, finding outfits, shoes and accessories etc. I’m such a girly girl so I love all of that stuff.

I got my roommate (not the evil one) to do my hair for me and I did my make up and everything else. The whole night itself wasn’t all that exciting. The theme was Monte Carlo and so they attempted to do some kind of casino theme, which wasn’t a total fail but wasn’t so great. 

I did enjoy it and I loved getting ready. Apparently there was food there but sadly, I did not get to enjoy it. Haha.
