How Los Angeles based future soul musician came to the decision of naming himself Goldwash is a mystery to me, but now that I think about it, a wash in gold does evoke all that is luxurious and posh, ritzy and opulent. It’s a thought much fitting of the artist’s “existential funk”, which he serves up in abundance on Why Hide It, the first single from his forthcoming EP Why Hide It. Though resplendent, Why Hide It is also raw and lustful. It’s a carnal heated, sexy burning, yet smooth buttery electronica and R&B funk emulsion both floaty and dense. Why Hide It features swooning saxophone harmonies and, as Goldwash himself puts it, Lex Luger-esque strings. If you need a song to go with your seedy late night adventures, this crimson burning, steamy sensual jam is it. Goldwash will be releasing his debut EP LDR soon and you can get a sneak peek into the EP with the title track. This intimate electronic R&B track has solid layers of electronica coming in and out of the track and the slight synthesization on his vocals add a level of vulnerability to the track. The vision on “LDR” is definitely something to look out for, the carefully placed drops and ghostly vocals are all good points.

Goldwash is at it again, intoxicating me with his unique brand of sensual seething, lavish rippling “existential funk”. New single LDR is the exact “sweet oblivion” he coos about in James Vincent McMorrow like buttery falsettos on the song. The Baltimore by way of Los Angeles electro soul artist has given us a sensational taste from and the title track off a debut EP, one which I more than eagerly await. LDR’s resplendent drapes and dynamic digressions form a labyrinthian sonic maze made up of surreal shimmering corners. LDR is out now on iTunes.

It was but two weeks ago that we were all greatly looking forward to brand new Frank Ocean, and I surmised that, perhaps, just maybe, new Frank Ocean would be delayed again. I was on the money, and no Frank Ocean dropped, but we were lucky enough to have Goldwash and his swooning cover of Thinking Bout You to help us survive the Ocean drought the one week more we needed to. But it’s Goldwash’s own original music that the Baltimore based artist brings to us this weekend via a sensational song named Honest. The track, which was debuted by venerated music station Boiler Room, is everything we’ve come to expect from this existential funk maestro. Honest squishes and trills, driven by svelte keys, fervent cooing, and jagged beats. It’s like a jam session involving James Blake, Jack Garratt, and Ben Khan, pure brilliance.
