M397/D/ZS198: AKA Larry

Mission Brief: Zoological Survey of M397/D

Mission Staff: Commander Nicole Ling, Science Officer Noel Breen, Zoological Specialist Lara Dalton, Botany Specialist Po Felding.

Log 43: Zoological Specialist Dalton.

We've been continuing to examine the creature designated as M397/D/ZS198, or Larry as it is known by the survey team. It is a bizarre creature to say the least. We gathered early on that it is a burrowing animal as it had burrowed straight through the base of our habitation unit. Commander Ling and Science Officer Breen have since repaired the damage. Larry is currently being held in a containment field. We initially used a standard animal containment unit but Larry has a surprising amount of strength which is disproportionate to his (we think it's male) size. Larry tested the containment field and has learned that it can't break through. It has an interesting behaviour pattern. It sits in the dead centre of the field watching us closely. It appears to be very calm and doesn't appear to see us as a threat. Personally I was in favour of releasing it, but due to the risk Larry poses to our equipment we have no other choice but to contain him for the time being.

M397/D/ZS198 is approximately fifty-eight centimetres in length. It has an entirely hairless body and has pale skin. This is not dissimilar to many burrowing animals on Earth. Its eyes are interesting. They appear to change colour based on the light available. At night the eyes take on a green quality, while during the day the eyes become dark and cloudy. I've surmised that Larry has excellent night vision, and has developed an ability to survive in day light when necessary.

It's most prominent feature is it's front limbs. It has large chelae on its front paws. They are remarkably well designed. The large outer pincer has a hard curved outer edge and a hollow scoop on the reverse. This is believed to be for digging and possibly self-defence. The inner pincer is used almost like an opposable thumb. It appears to be jointed in two places allowing the creature a surprising level of dexterity. It is unheard-of in similar species on Earth. In addition to this we have observed that the creature has an impressive crush strength. We estimate that it's chelae can exert in the region of 700 to 1000 KFG. Easily more than enough to break human bone, hence the containment field. However through observation of its eating habits we have potentially discerned that it subsists primarily on vegetable matter. It particularly likes nuts and roots, though we have observed it crushing particular types of rocks too. I have collected samples of the rock for testing to see whether it contains some nutritional value. The creature is a very small mouth, it appears to be only two centimetres in diameter. This is probably due to its burrowing habits. We have observed him clutching plant and mineral matter with his chelae in order to break them down to a sufficient size to eat.

We will continue to observe and log any further developments. I look forward to re-joining the ship on star date 41721.3.
