Tips on how to portray fantasy POC cultures (or real ones) without them coming across as exotic or other-wordly?

Portraying Fantasy Cultures of PoC

Basically the things to watch for are accessorizing and othering. This usually happens when someone tries to fuse two cultures together while creating a fantasy world.

Don’t do that - don’t pick and choose what parts of a culture you like and shove them together with another things from another culture you like because this leads to accessorizing and othering.

Also - don’t have a culture in the background with no one from that culture in the world or the main cast of the story. (See: Firefly and its racist shenanigans.)

I'm a loyal follower of Modern Family, but the shit Sofia Vergara puts up with has to fucking end. Now.

The treatment of her character is an appalling example of intersecting sexism and racism. She's seen as a trophy wife for a rich man. She's loud, abrasive, and only interested in looking good and taking care of the family. That would be okay if she was a well-developed character, but she's not. She's nothing more than the stereotypes Latinas face. And she is very attractive, which means she is made to be an exotic beauty, furthering the colonialism in current society.

And that's not just on Modern Family.
