Aspects are clearly more fundamental than classes by a long-shot.
Those floating jade symbols from that one panel about troll symbols mean something!
Multiple trolls can have the same symbol.
Everybody go edit your trollsonas…
There’s possibly something fundamentally special about the original Homestuck trolls (since they have the True Signs).
Hope and Rage actually mean something.
Light and Void are knowledge-based, not fortune-based.
Apparently putting on and taking off masks is a Heart thing, not a Mind thing?
The WhatPumpkin aspect pairs are almost definitely not canon.
Guys, this is more instrumental than we thought. The veil that’s been hiding so much of the HS canon has been lifted a ton. There’s still speculation to do, but so much has been settled. Finally!
“I’ll make a popper post about Extended Zodiac assignments for the Four Swords characters once I feel more settled in my decisions,” I said.
This is not that post.
This is nearly 1,000 words of rambling attempts at character analysis, in which I fail to pin down a single character’s sign to anything narrower than, at best, two to four options ^^;;
Still, I wanted to get my thoughts out in written form, so... here are my thoughts.
Green
Rust sign? Maybe? The first half of the description sounds more fitting than the second half.
Lunar sway, I’m not sure of. He’s more calculating than “act first think later” Blue, but I think Green does still favor instinct and intuition – so, slightly but not completely on the side of Prospit, there. But he does also have a bit of a rebellious streak (a Derse trait) inherited from the original Link (remember how he acted towards his father in the first chapter?)
Breath – … I… guess? Green’s being difficult, tbh, I’m not sure what class to give him. But the Breath-bound are “very good leaders” – on the other hand, they “will routinely be surprised that others look up to or feel inspired by them” whereas I feel Green’s leadership role came as a shock to him at first, but quickly became something he took quite seriously. The Breath-bound are “motivated” and “driven,” which fits how Vio described Green in the manga, but they also “have a tendency to underestimate themselves” which is not Green at all – like Blue and Vio, overcoming arrogance was part of his character arc!
Hope – Perhaps? “They do right for right's sake, and are quick to come to the aid of anyone they deem to be experiencing injustice.” Not sure how I feel about the “black-and-white thinking” aspect, though – he was very quick to accept Shadow’s redemption, and he wasn’t as fervent as Blue in denouncing Vio when it seemed he’d turned traitor.
Red
Olive sign, or possibly jade (though I doubt he’s that much of a perfectionist)
Prospit, for sure
Life – “deeply empathetic, they have an intuitive understanding of other's suffering.” The Life-bound are healers, which suits Red’s caring nature.
Blood – This aspect has to do with connections and interpersonal relationships, and Red is, I think, often a peace-keeper among the group. He was also, it could be argued, the one that brought them back together after they were separated in chapter four: he found Blue, then the two of them found Green, then the three of them found Vio. Red started it. He could be a Sylph of Blood, which would keep some of the “healer” aspect of Life, too
Blue
Blue sign, or possibly rust. But blue fits, and it’s his namesake color, so that’s probably what I’m going with.
Like Green, I’m not actually sure about Blue’s lunar sway. He certainly prefers charging in head-first over stopping to plan, which would seem to indicate Prospit, but he also balks against authority, which is a Derse thing. Hm…
Heart – “forging an identity is extremely important to the Heart-bound.” I quite like the implications of this in the light of his conflicts with Green over being “the real Link.” It gives me thoughts about canon!Blue and his character growth, eventually forging his own identity instead of playing tug-of-war with Green over the original Link’s.
Time – “fighters, full stop.” It definitely fits, but it also fits Shadow, and since I’m liking the idea of Heart for Blue more and more, I might let Shadow have it.
Vio
Gold sign (maybe purple sign, if you ignore the whole “entire caste is clowns” thing, and also the bit about “letting arguments fester,” I don’t think that’s very Vio either)
Derse, for sure
Light – except he’s got a Void-bound’s instinct to challenge assumptions and tear down false beliefs
Void – except he’s got a Light-bound’s curiosity and drive to seek out answers
Mind – just to avoid the whole Light vs Void issue, except I think his sense-of-identity is quite solid, actually
Basically, Vio’s being difficult.
Shadow
Lime sign - it’s the “outlawed” blood color, AND it fits him pretty darn well personality-wise!
Derse seems the “obvious” choice, but he could honestly go either way? He’s rebellious (Derse) but also instinctive (Prospit)
Doom – just ‘cause I really liked the idea of Rogue of Doom Shadow :( I think Shadow at his worst does fit a Doom-bound at their worst (“bitter, resentful, and fatalistic”) but Shadow at his best is not a Doom-bound at their best (he’s one of my faves, but “wise, kind, and non-judgemental” he ain’t)
Time – “fighters, full stop,” “fundamentally incapable of just accepting things as they come,” “impossible is just a word” – really my main reasons for not automatically choosing it are my lingering attachment to the idea of Shadow being a Doom player, and the fact that Time would also work well for Blue, who can’t have it if Shadow takes it
Rage – could also fit, especially the “at their best” and “at their worst” parts. But I do feel like canon!Shadow does, on some level, long for a sense of stability? I don’t think it’s that he wouldn’t be happy with anything but anarchy, I think it’s that the hand fate dealt him objectively sucked. A person wouldn’t necessarily have to think “chaos is the best form of society” to think “chaos is better than this.”
Zelda
Fuchsia sign (because royalty, basically. I wish I could go based on her personality, but the strongest impression I got from her in the manga was “almost completely unflappable, quiet without being shy” which doesn’t seem to correlate to any of the sign colors)
Prospit to counter Shadow’s “obvious” Derse, except she’s actually just as middle-ground as he is, in the opposite way: she’s adaptable (Prospit) and cerebral (Derse). So who knows.
Space – Especially if Shadow is Time and their lunar sways do end up opposites – I like the idea of them be foils of one another
Mind – Because Triforce of Wisdom, mostly. If she doesn’t take Space, though, someone else needs to – most likely Red or Green
IT'S NEAT TO SEE AN EXPANDED ZODIAC BUT WHERE THE FUCK ARE OPHIUCHUS AND CETUS?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?! THE 13TH AND 14TH SIGNS STILL AREN'T REPRESENTED?! THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU CHILDREN?!?
