Experience Mapping

Overall, trying to print a basic document out at the Herberger computer lab was a headache. Another student and I couldn’t get our computers to turn on, the system wouldn’t connect to the printers, I accidentally printing in black and initially, etc. However, with the power of teamwork and a lack of alternative options, we figured it out and walked away with our assignments in hand. Bless those two students who helped me figure it out, because if I do have to use the lab again, it will be much easier.

Too often in UX, we design for the best case because it let’s us get fancier and more feature-rich (an approach lends itself to better portfolio pieces). However, the worst experience is something you can’t even see because it won’t load with your 3G connection, or it can’t process your request because the server is overloaded. Simply making things that consistently work, even when conditions aren’t ideal, is a big first step towards a good user experience.
