Dispatch Fanfic: Wonders Never Cease
Robbie’s eyes were fixed on the shitty box TV above the back bar. Emma looked up and saw Mecha Man on the screen, surrounded by police. He’d just busted up a human trafficking ring, and the footage was of him surveying the police frog matching the subdued traffickers into specialized vans. Some of them were being taken away on ambulance stretchers.
“Do you think he should have killed them?” Robbie asked.
Emma took a large swallow of her beer and steadfastly did not remember the feeling of Weld’s hands, of his thick gloves on her skin. The fear of a foster father’s or brother's footsteps in the hallway. Waking up from being blacked out and realizing the safest way out was seeing it through.
“I’m not a great moral compass,” she said. “You should ask Petey.”
“I’m not asking Petey. I’m asking you.”
Emma turned and looked at him. His eyes were steady on hers, but there was a twist to his mouth that softened her. He was clearly ruining himself over something, trying to muscle his way through the way he always did until the inevitable crash out.
“I don’t know what he should have done,” Emma said eventually. “But if I had that kind of tech? I don’t know. I don’t think I would have been able to help myself.”
“Yeah,” he said hoarsely.
“But that’s why I’m not in a mech suit,” she said. “Those kinds of decisions are for better people than me.”
“You’re one of the best people I know,” he said.
