literally all visi needed was to know that robert wasn’t going to run away and back out at every opportunity where something bad happened. at any moment im sure she was ready to go back to shroud and villain life. but the continued support up until the end literally makes the difference of her choosing to be heroic. and you have to consciously make the decisions that show you care, that things haven’t changed for the worse but in fact in visi’s favor (whether she actually is recognizing of it or not).

invisigal — i wanna be saved!

invisigal x fem hero!reader — 670 words.

warnings: cursing (this is dispatch and COURTNEY we're talking about), mentions of violence, visi being the insulter final boss.

“are you an idiot?”

the fire extinguisher made a loud ‘clang’ sound as it dropped onto the floor.

“maybe,” you grinned, like courtney isn’t literally seething in irritation towards you.

“‘maybe’? maybe you should quit your job if you actually suck at this,” the brunette kicked the passed out villain aside, stomping out of the area of crime as the police arrived to clean up the mess. “can’t believe you’re a hero—almost got yourself killed by just a goddamn robber.”

you followed her with a dreamy gaze focused at her, the police chief intersecting with the both of you with his notepad in hand. here goes the investigation.

“we thank you both,” the chief cleared his throat. “please leave the suspect to us, we can handle the rest in case he wakes up.”

“in case he wakes up?” visi scoffed. “yeah, no. he’s a supervillain. two heroes are dispatched here for a reason.”

the man furrowed his brows. “‘supervillain’? no, no. miss, the criminal is just a random prisoner who escaped after a prison transfer incident. he doesn’t even have a villain name for himself.”

visi felt her brain short circuit for a moment, leaving herself too dumbfounded to respond immediately. “no way you’re that weak.”

“excuse me?”

“ah, no,” she groaned, shaking her head. “i’m talking to my… partner here. ‘scuse us for a moment, yeah?”

you found yourself being tugged by the invisible hero to the corner, a glare you expected already burning holes into your face.

“what was that?”

“what is ‘that’?”

“don’t fucking play dumb here with me,” she huffed. “no way you got yourself getting choked on the corner by that criminal helplessly that i had to slap his ass with a goddamn extinguisher.”

“yes, i wasn’t,” you answered so simply, so innocently. like a kinder admitting you made a mess.

“then what was that shitshow for!? you like getting choked?” courtney asked, feeling too exasperated with you already.

“i just want to experience getting saved by you. that bad?”

a moment of silence took over, her jaw hanging off slightly in speechlessness. “are you dumb? were you the one hit by that extinguisher?”

“no? i just wanted you to save me, really. nothing more, nothing less.”

visi could feel her teeth grinding from extreme vexation. you’re both heroes—meant to save civilians and stop the evil, not be the civilian and victimized by the villain themselves. “listen, dumbfuck,” she grabbed your collar. “we’re friends, but we’re also both dispatched here. you better do your job properly ‘cause i ain’t here to babysit a veteran.”

“ouch,” you casually replied, obviously not literally hurt by her verbal cruelty and honesty at the same time. it was directed at the ‘friends’ part, though she doesn’t need to know that. “you got one thing wrong, though. i’m not dispatched here—only you.”

her eyes crinkled, confusion seeping through. “what? the hell are you doing here, then?”

“wanted to see you work,” you finally let out the grin you’ve been holding back until the climax. “since i can’t meddle with your job, i had no choice but to be like a civilian, y’know? been waiting for the moment you actually save my ass, too.”

“seriously, why the fuck?” bewilderment won the brunette’s mind over, her hold on your shirt softening until it detaches.

“so i could owe you one,” you answered. “ask you for dinner or something. maybe even a movie and buy you that goddamn popcorn you can’t sneak inside the movie room.”

despite the ludicrousness of the situation, your true intent stole out a laugh from visi’s throat. “you’re fuckin’ ridiculous. you could’ve just asked.”

“that’s boringgg,” you sang with an eye roll, hands behind your back as you swayed. “i may have had pissed you off in the process right now but i know you enough to know you prefer it this way better.”

courtney cracked, visible yet not at the same time. a little, soft smirk emerged from the subtlest corner of her mouth.

“yeah, i do.”

At work, again, but here's a snippet of my writing and art for the first chapter of "Medical Analysis: How is this guy still alive?"

I'm having thoughts about Courtney's various aliases in Dispatch.

When she was a villain, we know she named herself Invisibitch, right? Descriptive, but not that imaginative of a name; it's her superpower with "bitch" appended. The name tells you she can turn invisible and she's a bitch here to fuck you up, it's very literal and blunt. It strikes me as emblematic of how she feels as a villain: crime is a necessary station for her, it's just what she has to do, but it's not something she puts a lot of effort into. Invisibitch isn't a name like Shroud or Toxic, which give less direct perspective on powers while also creating questions about the motives and goals. Shroud suggests darkness and mystique, Toxic implies danger and fear; as a name, Invisibitch just says "I'm an invisible villain."

But then she goes to SDN, and Blazer gives Courtney the name Invisigal. This is notable firstly because it's a given name, not a chosen one; it's not something Courtney chose for herself, but she chose to accept it. We also know it represents a softening of Courtney's image. Blazer gave it to her as an attempt at rebranding her to appear more as a hero and less as a villain (or as a "bitch"), but I think it also somewhat defangs Courtney; in a bouba vs. kiki kind of way, bitch has a sharper sound than gal does. So as a name, Invisigal is a a step towards Courtney's move away from villainy. Part of me wonders if we might even consider this as one of the first acts of support in her redemption. Another person (Blazer) saw potential in Courtney, and offered her a path to being someone who isn't on guard, who doesn't have to be a villain.

And then there are the nicknames, Visi and Vis. The former by Robert, Blazer, Royd, and Golem, the latter by just Robert. These, in my opinion, are so incredibly noteworthy because they are inversions of her super-name up til this point. Courtney's aliases have centered her invisibility. We know from other aspects of the game that she had a tendency to run and hide when the going gets tough. She's scared of failure so she doesn't commit; she makes herself invisible to protect herself from being seen. People who care about her then amicably give her a nickname which inverts that. They take the "in" out of "invisible." Courtney's friends make her visible, they let her know they see her, that they want to see her. That she doesn't have to hide.

There is so much complexity in the path of Courtney's super-aliases & nicknames, I love this game
