Another treasure from Steven Soderbergh's extensive Extension 765 blog, this cut of Heaven's Gate by Mary Ann Bernard is as she puts it, a turn of "violence toward [her] obsession," and a look into the film and the rehashing, reshaping and reforming what we know of storytelling and journeymaking.
Let me just say I’m sick of people digging up obscure masterpieces designed to make me feel like a philistine, or, worse, arguing that an acknowledged masterpiece isn’t in fact a masterpiece at all but the beneficiary of some collective cultural hypnosis. I’m going in the opposite direction: I’m going to call attention to a classic that, in my opinion, is as good--or even better--than we all think it is: Chinatown.
Steven Soderbergh dishes a bit of knowledge on what is truly a great film. I loved it the first time I saw it, and make sure to revisit it every so often.
