Hadestown (2017, Off-Broadway) - Digital Booklet Pics
GOD PLEASE BRING OUR FAMILY BACK TOGETHER
PRESENCE (2024)
Director: Steven Soderbergh Cinematography: Peter Andrews
i love watching you guys discover the cut lyrics from off broadway hadestown as someone who has been in this fandom for damn near a decade and heard every iteration of the show
Even More NYTW Hadestown moments that I miss PT3
Pt1, Pt2
I love the theme of Orpheus never being 'finished' with his musical masterpiece. It's always "It's not finished" and "I'm working on my song," or "aren't you working on your masterpiece?" That's so true of an artist, they never really feel done.
I like that even after he plays for Hades and Hades compliments him, he says "it's not finished." I greatly prefer this to bdwy!hadestown when Orpheus does in fact finish his song. It feels more real to think of him working on it until he dies, tweaking and improving, adding and changing, never being satisfied.
“Gather round you vagabonds; picking fruit and hopping freight...”
Epic I was a masterpiece, I can’t. 🥹
[Orpheus] “I’ll sing a song of a love gone wrong” [HERMES] “A love gone wrong alright. EVERY YEAR THEY HAD THIS FIGHT.”
“OooOOorpheus all the prEetty songs you sing aint gonna SHEeeltrr us from the Wind, the Wind, the Wind.”
[Orpheus] “to the patroness of all of this, Persephone!” [Hermes] “Here, here!!!”
[Orpheus] Well, come on..... *warm laughter* 🍷 "let the world we dream of be the one we live in now."🍷
That entire original toast. It’s better.
“WEEerEn’T we BIRDS of a Feather.” 😭
“With a suitcase full of SUMMERtime, PerSEphone, by name!”
“I recall there was a time, we were happy you and I; in the garden where we met, nothing was between us yet.” 🥹🥹🥹
Persephone focuses first on herself and hades. Her grief stems from the loss of him, of their relationship. She appeals to their personal bond instead of attacking how his actions are destroying the overworld which I think is a lot more endearing. It shines a more vulnerable light on their relationship, and on Persephone’s emotions. She really just wants the man she loves back.
I also like that in the NYTW it Hades isn’t the reason™️ times are hard above ground?? Like, times are hard and people are poor but it never explicitly says that’s Hades’ fault. He takes advantage of the situation by exploiting people’s needs and wants, and in so doing he gets them to work for him. But it just feels like he is a successful lord of the underworld that takes advantage of the poor, not like he CREATED the poor?? And he isn’t the reason summer is GONE??? and he isn’t destroying the planet?????
Like, Hadestown is problematic for sure and in Epic III Orpheus paints a picture of how Hades is cold and hard and hurts everything and everyone he touches, but it isn’t played as if he’s literally the cause of global warming..... where as in BDWY they’re like “THE OCEANS ARE OVERFLOWING BECAUSE OF YOU” 😤
“Can’t you see she made a DEAL? Gave her Wooord, took a VOW?”
but why did they take persephone’s lines out of chant ii 🙁
Persephone: Love was when he came to me, begging on his bended knees to please have pity on his heart; I let him lay me in the dirt. I felt his arms around me then. We didn’t need a wedding bed, dark seeds scattered on the ground, the wild birds were flying around....
The fates are the main villains in NYTW, manipulating gods and humans alike.
You can hear Eurydice come in the the “la la la” of Epic III with all the other workers. I know that’s just because it was a small cast but I love hearing Eurydice singing with Orpheus and believing in his music like that ❤️
Persephone: “How long have we been married?” Hades: “Since the world began”
Nabiya crying in Come home with me II 😭💔
ALL OF COME HOME WITH ME II HELLO WHERE IS MY DIALOGUE IN THAT SCENE?
[Eurydice] why are you getting on our knees? [Orpheus] I’m asking you to marry me. Marry me. say ‘I do.’ I came all this way to ask you to.
THE ENTIRE BEGINNING OF PROMISES, WHAT THE HECK, WHY CUT THAT SHORT???💔😩
I love that Eurydice admits she’s done wrong too! and orpheus has a chance to confront her about her betrayal of his love and faith, and let her know she really hurt him... they both take accountability and agree to do better, which makes the ending EVEN SADDER.
"You're early"😟 "I missed you." 😭😭😭
presence
unfortunately i don't have birth info on chloe and tyler cause they're new actors so im going to be taking this from the director and writers placements for inspiration.
in a house, beautiful, old, and ready to be a home lingers a presence. nonspecific, unassuming, and protective. a family with problems and tragedy board with this wayward presence and the self fulfilling prophecy begins to unfold...
the journey of the in between, a wayward spirit at the crossroads with a family at a junction just the same.
total eclipse of the moon, an unsettling transformation for a mother and a father.
director, steven soderbergh, gives the wayward spirit, the embodiment of a karmic release, the spotlight in the play. writer, david koepp gives presence to the nature of memory and grief.
both, steven (purva ashada moon + uttara ashada ketu in sagittarius) and david, (uttara ashada sun + ketu in capricorn) utilize the nodes in this strange ghost story.
as the nodes of the moon overlap its like a snapshot, a pause, palpitation in existence. a change within a split second. every minute, every hour, filled to the brim with them.
bharani moon native, lucy lui is the matriarch. a businesswoman of questionable ethics dismissing her daughters grief in favor of time while hasta moon native, chris sullivan, acts as a nurturing but fearful father picking up the pieces of his daughter left behind.
the directors ashlesha mars AK was highlighted every time there was a disturbance the entity began to emit pulse vibrations. felt by whoever was close by. primarily by chloe and tyler's father who has ashlesha rahu 🐍
lessons of consequence and neglect unearth this family where the postponement of grief bring more grief and consequence.
watching this in the midst of pisces season was too perfect. im refraining from sharing more about the symbolism of the movie because y'all should watch it
