Touko: I’d love to, but I can’t because I have a lot of work to do at the university. If I find a good tutor, I’ll recommend her to you. You can repay me by being really nice to Lain.

Kaori: Wow! You really are like a big sister. I wish I had a sister. I’m an only child. Lain’s an only child, too, isn’t she? Does she have siblings? My mom said something about Lain having a sibling in the hospital, and that that’s why neighbors avoid her house.

Touko: Ha, ha. Lain is an only child. Her parents are good, ordinary people. I suppose Lain is sad about being an only child, too.

Kaori: It’s really something to have a tutor, though.

Touko: Well...

Kaori: Lain doesn’t seem like someone with a problem.

Touko: No, no. She doesn’t have a problem. I just want to know more about her. She’s a very nice girl. She’s the kind of girl that keeps quiet even when something is bothering her, so that she doesn’t worry other people, isn’t she?

Kaori: You’re right. She is like that. I remember too, that once when I tried to buy her a treat for helping me with my homework, she refused. I was a little annoyed. Lain hasn’t been bullied at school, though. The kids there aren’t so bad there.

Touko: Really?

Kaori: Well, sure. You don't believe me? I don’t get bullied either. Ha, ha.

Kaori: I don’t remember having talked about it much. I don’t mean that I haven’t talked about it. It was as if it was there when I noticed it. Ha, ha. It’s all really strange. I remember that Lain skipped physical education. Kyoko or someone said that Lain has a weak physical constitution. I think Kyoko knows Lain better than I do. Lain is pretty, but I've never seen her with any boys... Oh, I’m sorry. I’m being so negative.

Touko: It’s okay. Don’t worry about it.

Touko: Nice to meet you. Order whatever you want.

Kaori: Lain doesn’t go out much, and it’s hard to tell if she’s dating anyone. Sometimes she helps me with my schoolwork, and I offer to take her out and have some fun to thank her, but she never comes. A royal chocolate parfait, please. And who did you say you were?

Touko: I’m her tutor.

Kaori: Oh... a tutor. That’s why she’s so smart. I’ll start on my parfait. I really like their parfaits here. But what did you want to talk about?

Touko: Well, what is she like at school? What kind of girl is she, from your point of view?

Kaori: Lain is a quiet girl. She doesn’t stand out too much and she doesn’t have too many friends. She’s smart, though. She got a really good grade on one of her papers. Some complicated subject. Kaori couldn’t understand it.

Who’s Misato-chan?

A friend of Lain’s.

Misato? We had a class with a girl named Minako... Who's Misato?

She was in a class with you in junior high.

Huh? No way. There was definitely nobody by that name in my junior high school class. You must mean Minako. But Minako wasn’t friendly with Lain at all.

Oh. I must have been misinformed. Never mind.

Kyoko: I don’t dislike Lain. But lately she’s been hard to approach.

Touko: I know what you mean.

Kyoko: Don’t you, though? I think a lot of the kids see her that way. No one is bullying her, now, but most of us pretty much ignore her.

Touko: Yeah.

Kyoko: You should talk to her. Tell her to laugh the way she used to.

Touko: The way she used to?

Kyoko: In my old memories, she was always smiling. I remember that when we were together, she would always laugh.

Touko: I see. I sort of had that impression. That’s why I was concerned.

Kyoko: What was it? Something about my memory. I remember now. I remember that we were in biology class. Lain was asking the teacher after class about the brain and how memories are stored. I thought that that was pretty impressive. I asked her what she had asked the teacher, and she said she asked the teacher how to recollect memories. Weird.

Kyoko: We were in the same class in 5th and 6th grade. We were in the same group because we sat close to each other. She was quiet, so she didn’t talk to many kids besides me. She was like a sister to me. We didn’t play together much, though.

Touko: When would you say that Lain started to change?

Kyoko: She wasn't so gloomy until about a year ago. When I see her these days, we don’t have much to talk about. It’s too bad, but lately, she’s just another classmate to me.

Touko: Have you talked to her at all recently?

Kyoko: Recently? I feel like there was something. I wonder what it was...

Touko: Can you remember?

Kyoko: That's weird. I usually have a good memory.

Touko: Do you remember talking about shopping or boys?

Kyoko: No. I don’t think we talked about that.
