I have a question after seeing you post on Psychomotor Retardation. When a character with Pyschomotor Retardation speaks, how is their grammar? Say if they forgot the word "malfunction", would say say "doesn't work" or "not work/ not working" or some other variation, or would they just stay quiet until they think of "malfunction"?

That depends on the character. Sometimes using smaller, simpler words is easier for one character; for other characters, it wouldn’t affect their grammar, just their rate of speech.

So let’s say that Alex has psychomotor retardation. Here’s two ways you could write this:

There is a pause as Alex seems to wrack his brains for the right word. He eventually gives up, stating simply, “It’s not working.”

Vs.

After a long pause, Alex speaks, her words sluggish and slow, “I think it’s malfunctioning.”

It’s up to you as the writer to decide how it manifests.

What causes Psychomoter retardation? If there are many things just give a few examples.

An incomplete list:

Schizophrenia and related disorders

Mood disorders (depression, bipolar, etc)

Eating disorders

Anxiety disorders

Parkinson’s

Substance use

Certain psychiatric medications

That covers a LOT of disorders in the DSM-5.

Detective: If you don’t have it, we can have some of our specialists look into it. If you do hear from her, could you keep our little meeting here a secret? It would be important for you, too, that you keep this a secret.

Shinji: Is that a threat?

Detective: Oh, not at all. We have better things to do than make threats. As long as we aren’t interfered with, things will be just fine. That’s what I mean.
