There aren’t a lot of stories that feature male-female friendships with absolutely zero romance, and that’s a real shame because we need to see that more often in media. Fortunately, I can think of at least five examples from fantasy and science fiction movies and shows:

Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble from Doctor Who

Malcom Reynolds and Zoe Washburn from Firefly

Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton from Marvel Cinematic Universe

Edgin and Holga from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Edwin Payne and Niko Sasaki from Dead Boy Detectives

For writers (and readers)

The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, one of the Big Three of speculative fiction magazines and an extremely prestigious market is undergoing a change of editor.

C.C. Finlay, who has helmed the magazine for over fourteen years will be stepping down to focus on his own writing.

His replacement is Sheree Renee Thomas.

Thomas is well known as a short story writer, poet, and editor. As an editor, she put together the amazing Dark Matter anthologies, both of which earned World Fantasy Awards (in 2001 and 2005).

Thomas will also be a special guest at Discon III, the 2021 WorldCon (it has yet to be decided whether a physical con will be attempted, if so it will be in Washington, DC).

Thomas will be the second woman at the helm of F&SF (the first was Kristine Kathryn Rusch) and to my knowledge not only the first Black editor of F&SF but the first Black editor of any of the Big Three.

She is also an amazing person and a brilliant poet. While I will miss Finlay’s insightful rejections, Thomas is highly qualified.

The magazine is closed to submissions for the transition until January 2021, and Thomas’ first issue with be the March/April 2021 issue.
