Playstation Indies Initiative
Its summertime so you know what that means, hot weather (if you’re in the western hemisphere), Mr. Softee's ice cream trucks, sun-bathing w/ a mask on, of course, maybe a trip to the beach while enjoying a delicious passion fruit frozen marg (COVID permitting) and Indie video games announcing and releasing.
I’ve always been an aficionado of indie games because they offer delicious morsels of unique gameplay and worlds often without a 30+ hour commitment. I love jumping into each unique world, dipping my toe in just long enough to beat the game and move onto the next. Some of my favorite memories gaming come from indies such as Hyper Light Drifter, Aliennation, Shovel Knight, Undertale, and Furi just to name a few.
Today, Sony announced nine different Indie games, set to launch for the PS4 and PS5 at some point in the future.
Below are a few of the indie games that really caught my eye and I wanted to bring some spotlight to them.
Carto
By. Sunhead Games
Carto what I assume is short for cartographer seems like a cute puzzle game where you literally change your surroundings by moving pieces of your map. (Below)
“Issa Party”
I wonder if they are looking for “spice” in this desert area?
Mountain goat riding, count me in.
Haven
By. The Game Bakers.
From the studio that brought you the action-neon dripped Furi, brings you, Haven. A co-op relaxing combat adventure.
In Haven you explore a mysterious planet with a pal. It’s so good to see couch co-op still prevalent in modern games.
Furi’s neon glow and fast-paced combat returns although this time, it’s co-op!! It looks like both players will have to time their button presses accurately to pull off this blasting maneuver. (Above)
Combat looks like a mix between Furi and Chrono Trigger, is that an “x-strike” I see? (below)
Traversal looks similar to an on the rails shooter, the upcoming game Solar Ash Kingdom while trying to avoid a blight similar to BOTW.
It looks like there are varying dialog options with the opportunity for each player to control the conversation.
Look’s like its slumber party time!!!!
F.I.S.T: Forged in Shadow Torch
by. TiGames
Locked, cocked, and ready to rock, this bunny has a bone to pick wearing what looks like a power suit equipped with a variety of weapons sure to keep combat fresh and interesting. This steam-punk 2d action platform looks to scratch that action platformer you didn’t know you needed.
Below we see the Bunny equipped with a gigantic metal arm sure to give anyone unlucky enough to be on the receiving end the one-two piece special.
It looks like his homie was kidnapped by some force and its the Rabbits job to get him back.
SMokey the bear is now a forger.
Overall, the 2-d combat looks fun, it looks like the rabbit can screwattack ala Samus, stays strapped with a giant drill, and whipping an electrical whip sure to give Omega Red a run for his money.
I am not sure if this is a Metroidvania but the gameplay and combat remind me of Strider mixed with Wild 9 (psx). Either way, this one looks super fun.
Heavenly Bodies
By. 2pt Interactive.
Heavenly Bodies combines zero-g puzzle gameplay and co-op shenanigans. It looks like you solve puzzles on a space station, trying to prevent yourself from dying while onboard.
This is what happens when Hal doesn’t open the pod bay doors. (Above)
“Look, I got your leg.” You know what they say, in space, no one can hear you scream. (Above)
Limited visibility exploring a space station, what’s the worse that could happen? (Above)
You and a pal, tackle the puzzles, sure to require coordination, otherwise, you both bear the brunt of your failures. The movement is akin to OctoDad, and the zero-g gameplay is sure to bring several laughs when playing with a friend.
I wonder what type of service the astronaut gets here.
I can only hope most of these games come out on more platforms. Either way, make sure to support indie developers by buying their games. Often indies are lost in the sea of AAA games, but too many people forget indie game developers push our beloved medium forward.
