ive always wanted to be a witch since i was little but i dont know where to start. i used to try the internet, but then weird things came up like having to buy spells and it seemed like it was just for the money. any tips or books i should look into?-gmk
Yeah, I know how you feel on that. The internet can be a great source of information, but it can also be a cesspool of scam artists and shitty information. That’s kinda why I enjoy certain crevices of the internet like Tumblr and a few online chatrooms because you meet a lot of people who really know there stuff, cite their sources, and offer great advice built on personal experience or educated assumptions without having to buy a $50 book. Granted, you still need to be wary. I think a while ago I went to a circle of sorts and one of the younger witches suggested that someone mix urine and bleach in a curse jar. What the fuck. I’ll suggest some cool magical blogs that follow at the bottom, okay?
Okay, so what is a Witch? By definition, a Witch is someone who uses witchcraft. End of story. Some of the newbies will suggest that you have to religious to be a witch or you have to pass some huge year-long test and some other garbage, but that’s not true. A witch can be an Atheist or Christian, work with witchcraft for a day or be in it for three years. It all depends on what you’re comfortable with.
(Personal Thoughts Ahead! Warning!)
As far as actual witchcraft, that’s a little harder for me to explain. You know when you’re fishing and you throw and empty hook out? Sometimes you get a fish, sometimes you don’t. All in all, it’s fate if you catch one at all. But you really need this fish (Maybe you have a family to feed or you’re in a competition. Whatever), so you can’t leave it up to fate anymore. You get desperate and grab a worm from the ground, sticking it to the hook and casting it out with a greater chance of catching a fish. You still might not get the fish, but now you’re more likely to.
*Witchcraft is a lot like bait to me. You’re increasing your chances of something happening, whether it’s banishing the dead from your room or cursing your co-worker to choke on that gum they’re always smacking in your ear. If you close your eyes, visualize what you’re wanting to do (think of visualizing and believing it will happen as your worm), you can really do some simple witchcraft.
So what’s with the candles, crystals, and piss everywhere? Back to our fish. And you don’t want just any old fish anymore, you want this one specific fish. What do you do? You know that it’s attracted to orange because it only seems to pop up when you’re in your orange boat, so you know you’ll increase your chances even more if your bait is orange. You also know this is a hhhuge fish, so you can’t just use worms and grasshoppers, you get a nice and wriggly fish. A gold fish will work, you decide. Now your chances are in the hundreds.
*This concept can be applied to witchcraft because a lot of it deals with associations. I have my own set while other witches may have their own. These associations help guide whatever will we have and bend it into specifics. Want a job? Set a dollar on your dresser with the word “JOB” on the face. Oh, but you want a specific job? Place a tube of lipstick on the dollar if you’re looking for a cosmetologist job or a dog treat for a job at PetSmart. The associations are endless.
Ah, shit. But you can’t afford that goldfish! Never fear, you can get a rubber one from the Dollar Tree that works just as good without blowing your wallet to shit.
*This is what no one told me until I got to Tumblr (and trust me, a lot of us are on a budget so don’t feel bad), YOU CAN ALWAYS REPLACE EXPENSIVE SHIT FOR CHEAPER SHIT IF YOU NEED TO. Need colored candles? Birthday candles work great! Need to power up a spell but can’t afford a quartz crystal? A couple of batteries will do just fine! It all depends on your creativity, Anon.
My advice?
Don’t let anyone tell you you’re not a witch if you feel you are
Don’t do anything you’re not comfortable with
You can do witchcraft with a million ingredients or nothing at all, don’t feel shitty if you only have a candle or some string
Don’t believe everything you’ve heard, not even what I say
Stay creative
What works for me may not work for you
There’s no one right way to be a witch. Unless you’re being a douche, then you’re definitely wrong
Be safe
Keep learning
And practicing
As far as books go, though, I’m drawing a blank. I’ll have to find a post from one of my favorite witches and reblog it for you!
Here’s a short list of my favorite witches:
hellboundwitch.tumblr.com
littlequeermermaid.tumblr.com
lilfairyboy.tumblr.com
ittybittynympette.tumblr.com
christowitch.tumblr.com
fable-witch.tumblr.com
faerielywitchy.tumblr.com
This list would be bigger, but my computer is dying. :C
Also, if anyone would like to add to this or correct me, please do. I’m kind of an idiot, so I’m always ready to be wrong about something.
