In Faces Feature Figures, students of ActonArt were getting spooky with old Hollywood stars!
An extra challenge was added by drawing on book pages, and by using sharpie to develop shadows! Smart use of hatching, stippling and scumbling effects was key.

By referencing the bone nooks and crannies, students got a concrete understanding of just how those muscles all criss-cross and work together.

In the first week of the spring trimester, students draw the entire skeleton in proportion. In the following week, they will overlay the muscle structure.

Understanding of anatomy and sculptural form is always important, but it makes the pain of drawing feet so much easier! By thinking of the foot in terms of simple shapes, the artist can think of it rotating in space.

The hands are always a daunting task for a figure drawing - a complex piece of the body, hands consist of lots of moving parts to contend with. Delving more into the anatomy and what is underneath the skin helps understand why the hand does what it does.

A difficult body part to wrap the head around, the ears become much simpler once we step back and take a look at the discreet structures and how they fold around each other.
