Day 3: The Moirai This was super fun! I ended up really liking the concept of the drawing and I actually managed to get the idea in my head as accurately as possible. So, the Moirai is supposed to be the 3 Goddesses of fate. Klotho “The spinner” who spun the thread of life, Lakhesis “The Apportioner of lots” the one who meassures, and Athropos (or Aisa) “She who cannot be turned” who cut it short. They are meant to signify life itself, as Klotho who spins the life of man and Lakhesis who measured his time and Lakhesis is the one who measured how long he was gonna live and Athropos who cut it when it was his time. They didn’t interfere with human lives, they just watched and saw how it went. It was Zeus Moiragetes (the leader of the moirai) who had the power to seize their fate. Inktober (late!) Day 30 🔱Nemesis🔱 "Nemesis was the ancient Greek goddess of divine retribution. As such, she meted out punishment for evil deeds, undeserved good fortune, and hubris (arrogance before the gods). She was also called Adrasteia, meaning “the inescapable,” or the “Goddess of Rhamnous” in recognition of her famous temple in the city Rhamnous. Her Roman counterpart was Invidia, the goddess of jealousy as well as vengeance. Sources consistently named Nyx, the goddess of the night, as the mother of Nemesis, but were inconsistent on her father. Zeus, Oceanus, and Erebus have all been described as Nemesis’s father, while yet other sources claimed she had no father at all. Sources were also inconsistent on Nemesis’s children. Some sources claimed Leda was the mother of Helen of Troy and her twin sister Clytemnestra, while other sources named Nemesis as their mother. The twins Castor and Pollux were likewise sometimes described as Leda’s sons and sometimes as Nemesis’s sons. In myths where Nemesis was named as the mother of the two sets of twins, Nemesis was pursued by Zeus. In an attempt to escape Zeus’s unwanted attentions, Nemesis transformed herself into a goose. Undeterred, Zeus transformed himself into a swan, caught Nemesis, and impregnated her. Nemesis then laid two eggs, each of which contained a set of twins. Some sources then elaborated that one or both of the eggs were passed on to Leda, who hatched and then raised the children as her own. As a purveyor of justice, Nemesis was often depicted with a sword and scales." #inktober #intober2018 #inktober2k18 #facesanddolls #greekgoddessfeast #greekgoddess #greek #myart #mythology #greekmyths #ink #watercolor #colors #inking #nemesis #artist #artistsoninstagram #myinktober #inktoberday30 #sketch #sketches https://www.instagram.com/p/Bpqeu3_AWhJ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1rig56j05yrih
Inktober (Late!) Day 29: 🔮Melinoe👹 "Melinoë is a chthonic nymph or goddess invoked in one of the Orphic Hymns and propitiated as a bringer of nightmares and madness. Melinoë is the daughter of Persephone and was fathered by both Zeus and Hades in their Orphic dual-god role. The Orphics in particular believed that Zeus and Hades were the same deity and portrayed them as such. Zeus was portrayed as having an incarnation in the underworld identifying him as literally being Hades and leading to Zeus and Hades essentially being two representations and different facets of the same god and extended divine power Melinoë's connections to Hecate and Hermes suggest that she exercised her power in the realm of the soul's passage, and in that function may be compared to the torchbearer Eubouleos in the mysteries. According to the hymn, she brings night terrors to mortals by manifesting in strange forms, "now plain to the eye, now shadowy, now shining in the darkness", and can drive mortals insane. The purpose of the hymn is to placate her by showing that the Orphic initiate understands and respects her nature, thereby averting the harm she has the capacity for causing." #inktober #intober2018 #inktober2k18 #facesanddolls #greekgoddessfeast #greekgoddess #greek #myart #mythology #greekmyths #ink #watercolor #colors #artist #artistsoninstagram #myinktober #inktoberday29 #inking #art #traditionalart #sketch #sketches #nightmaregoddess https://www.instagram.com/p/BpqMWm-An6I/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1d4wll2htblna
Inktober (late!) Day 28: 🍎Eris, Goddess of Chaos🎭 "Eris was the goddess or personified spirit (daimona) of strife, discord, contention and rivalry. She was often portrayed, more specifically, as the daimona of the strife of war, haunting the battlefield and delighting in human bloodshed. Because of Eris' disagreeable nature she was the only goddess not to be invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. When she turned up anyway and was refused admittance, she raged and threw a golden apple amongst the goddesses inscribed "To the fairest." Three laid claim to it--Hera, Aphrodite and Athena--and in their rivalry brought about the events leading up to the Trojan War. The hapless Paris, Prince of Troy, was appointed to select the fairest by Zeus. The goddesses stripped naked to try to win Paris' decision, and also attempted to bribe him. Hera offered political power; Athena promised infinite wisdom; and Aphrodite tempted him with the most beautiful woman in the world: Helen, wife of Menelaus of Sparta. While Greek culture placed a greater emphasis on prowess and power, Paris chose to award the apple to Aphrodite, thereby dooming his city, which was destroyed in the war that ensued Eris was closely identified with the war-goddess Enyo. Homer uses the names interchangeably. Her Roman name was Discordia." #inktober #intober2018 #inktober2k18 #facesanddolls #greekgoddessfeast #greekgoddess #greek #myart #mythology #greekmyths #ink #watercolor #colors #inking #art #traditionalart #sketch #sketches #eris #goddess #goddessofchaos #inktoberday28 https://www.instagram.com/p/BpiQqN2nHIG/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=aoyc9es7zj0j
Inktober (late!) Day 25: 🌚🌕Selene, Moon Goddess 🌕🌚 "Selene, goddess of the moon, truly represented the moon itself to the Greeks. Although she counts as a goddess in her own right, Selene often gets associated with archer goddess, Artemis, who is also a moon goddess. These two goddesses have additional association with Hecate. Selene is a Titan goddess. Titan gods and goddesses were actually the divine beings that preceded the Olympian gods and goddesses. The first of these divine beings emerged from the primordial and originally called Gaia mother and Uranus father. Several lovers are attributed to her in various myths, including Zeus, Pan, and the mortal Endymion. In classical times, Selene was often identified with Artemis, much as her brother, Helios, was identified with Apollo. Selene and Artemis were also associated with Hecate, and all three were regarded as lunar goddesses, but only Selene was regarded as the personification of the moon itself." #greek #inktober #intober2018 #inktober2k18 #facesanddolls #greekgoddessfeast #greekgoddess #greekgods #ink #myart #mythology #greekmyths #inking #watercolor #sketch #luna #selene #moongod #moongoddess #inktoberday25 #inktoberseries #inktoberart #artist #artoninstagram #artistsoninstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BpaU1tHgvvL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1gyocqnnfeh9h
Inktober (late!) Day 22 💘Aphrodite💘 "Aphrodite was an ancient Greek goddess of love, beauty, desire, and all aspects of sexuality, Aphrodite could entice both gods and men into illicit affairs with her good looks and whispered sweet nothings. Born near Cyprus from the severed genitalia of the sky god Uranus, Aphrodite had a much wider significance than the traditional view as a mere goddess of love and sex. Worshipped by men, women, and city-state officials, she also played a role in the commerce, warfare, and politics of ancient Greek cities. In addition, Aphrodite was honoured as a protector of those who travelled by sea and, less surprisingly, courtesans and prostitutes. The goddess’ Roman equivalent was Venus. Compelled by her mother Hera to marry the not-so-great catch of Hephaistos, the lame god of fire and crafts, Aphrodite was less than faithful, having notorious affairs with the gods Ares, Hermes, and Dionysos." #inktober #intober2018 #inktober2k18 #facesanddolls #greekgoddessfeast #greekgoddess #greek #myart #mythology #greekmyths #ink #watercolor #colors #aphrodite #art #traditionalart #sketch https://www.instagram.com/p/BpXuyB9HydG/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=sbv4pfru4p23
Inktober Day 22: 🕊🐣Leda🐣🕊 "Leda, in Greek legend, usually believed to be the daughter of Thestius, king of Aetolia, and wife of Tyndareus, king of Lacedaemon. Leda was admired by Zeus, who seduced her in the guise of a swan. As a swan, Zeus fell into her arms for protection from a pursuing eagle. Some versions say that Leda was raped by the swan. Their consummation, on the same night as Leda lay with her husband Tyndareus, resulted in two eggs from which hatched Helen (later known as the beautiful "Helen of Troy"), Clytemnestra, and Castor and Pollux (also known as the Dioscuri).
