“Lucky Knots” (2026)
As Chinese New Year comes around, and everyone enjoys their family reunions and festivities, attempting to retain some semblance of normalcy—the Sinodiasporas around the world must honor our rage, our grief and never forget the losses we have incurred.
We cannot give into the fatigue and the numbness that ensues. We must utilise the pride and anger we have connected to our ancestral lands, our heritage, our predecessors, our allies, and the multiple anti-Chinese anti-immigrant movements that have historically targeted and massacred our own.
The Chinese were the first race excluded entirely from cross-border migrations, and this happened all over the Anglosphere and their influenced territories.
Do not forget our peoples terrorised and killed by anti-immigrant laws. Do not forget our children in the Epstein files, and the many more unnamed and faceless victims.
Do not forget generations of debt, keeping families tied to a single owner/land. Do not forget the lynching mobs. Do not forget the razed properties and livelihoods. Do not forget the stolen children. Do not forget the enslaved adults and children alike. Do not forget the trafficked coolies and their fatalistic labour as a part of the Pacific and Atlantic Slave Trade. Do not forget the detainment/concentration camps. Do not forget the lost trails of interned Asians. Do not forget the head-hunting and the scalpings. Do not forget the massacres and the mass rapes of our peoples.
Do NOT believe in the model minority myth on ANY SIDE, my Asian siblings, you are still gonna be targets of hate crimes, deportations and racism long after this televised violation of human rights is over. Your ancestral HOMES have ALWAYS been the theatres for warring grounds, and your resources for their exploits and your bodies for their use.
Do not forget: They do not see your humanity.
And while these are just the people who have died, there are countless more RIGHT NOW, faced with the risk of dying. They are faced with the dehumanisation, suffering and torture that comes before the unconscious finality of death. Whether they are currently or are yet to be detained, the persecution continues and so the death toll will only grow.
They never show what happens to us. They hesitate to EVER label what happens to us as a hate crime. All the lynchings and the mowing down with guns, you will never see on your screens. They never spare more than a glance at what happens to us. Watch your news, look at your social media, DIG FOR THE FACTS, listen to your community.
Not because you’re darker than them, that’s never the only problem. It is because you look different, you talk different, you move through this world different. Asians are the model minority and forever foreignors and forever Yellow Peril, that never stopped being their truth.
Regardless of the "legality" of one's residence in USA, or how law-abiding and "good" their livelihoods have been, they are not safe from persecution by and death in the hands of the same law that claims to see "all persons as equal". Yet they weigh the worth of our lives and our right to live safely, by our socioeconomic capital and material contributions, is dehumanising.
Lives are not measured by their labour.
And just like any minority, the moment you stop being useful is the moment the fact you’ve always been in this beast’s mouth becomes glaringly obvious.
I would also like to draw attention to intersectional misandry, specifically the intersection of race, immigrant status and masculinity. It is NOT a coincidence, that most of these victims perceived as outsiders are men, who also coincided with being BIPOC and/or immigrants. "Foreign" masculinity is often subject to victimisation and violence, BIPOC masculinity especially is hypervisible and racially profiled. It is NOT a coincidence that the women victims are Black or Queer women.
Has anyone asked WHY ARE THEY TARGETING BIPOC MEN? What is the USA doing to the countries in the global south, to which these persons are deported to?
WHO, OF WHAT GENDER + AGE + FATHERLESS FAMILIES + RACE DEMOGRAPHIC, does this leave behind in the USA? What about the future of the world colonised by the Anglosphere forces?
Chaofeng Ge, a migrant from China, was claimed to have been found dead in a Pennsylvania detention facility run by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as ICE. The ICE report suggests suicide.
However, the autopsy report found with his arms and legs HOGTIED in the shower where he was hung, which casts such reasoning under suspicion of foul play. According to Yanfeng Ge, Chaofeng’s brother, their family have received no information from the government despite requesting it under the Freedom of Information Act. Their family have filed a lawsuit as of this week.
Nobody in the facility could speak Mandarin to help him communicate his needs, they had him write notes on pieces of paper, to be sent outside of the facility, translated and sent back: which took days. They would not have been able to get him the proper mental health care and it was an even more isolating experience for him in an already traumatising situation, even in his final days.
Some of our peoples will never be able to go home to their families. Some families bear empty seats at their tables. Some celebrate from the confines of detainment centres, and it wouldn’t be a far cry to call it concentration camps. For some, their CNY dinners are maggot-filled slop.
There will never be justice for some, so the Fu talismans are there to protect their bodies from further desecrations and loss in dignity. The red Lucky Knots hang from their nooses like a collaring.
