“You two make such a cute couple.” “We’re not a couple.” with Kara and Querl
dedicated to the lovely and talented @fairyroses, because I think she needs this tonight
and also, a follow-up to this!
~
Kara didn’t know what to expect, from her relationship with Brainy.
(even if it wasn’t real- she still had to think of this as a relationship, believe in it as much as possible, so others would too.
And who knew? Maybe, eventually… if Brainy wanted to stay… or if he stayed for longer than intended, it could be real.)
But that was wishful thinking, as unreal right then as the gigantic container of potstickers that sat on her desk.
Kara grabbed three before sitting down, eating them one after the other (they were even better than Noonan’s, if that was possible) and taking the note that was left on her desk after she’d finished two more.
Guaranteed to enjoy- I found the recipe myself, asked Alex if it needed any modifications, and this is the result
Hope these brighten your day (as you brighten mine)
Love,
Quentin
“Are those from your boyfriend?” Franklin, one of the junior reporters, commented. “You two make such a cute couple.”
“We’re not a couple.”, Kara almost said, still looking down at the note she held. But of course she couldn’t say that right then, to anyone.
“How’d you know?” she answered instead.
“I saw him bring those up here.” He said. “He seemed really happy, just to be with you. Gave me some great advice, also, which was a good bonus. And last week, when he brought take-out, I met him here.”
Kara smiled, remembering that. It had been a difficult day, with difficult news to report, but any lunch from him made everything better.
Rao, I have to thank him.
“I guess giving is his love language.” He continued. “Especially food.”
“That’s great.” She said. “I mean, yeah. It is- he knows me really well. And I should call him-“
“Right, I’ll leave you alone.” Franklin answered, as Kara called Brainy’s number.
“Hey, it’s me.” She said, when he picked up.
“Good afternoon, Kara. I take it you liked my delivery?”
“Loved it.” Kara answered, genuinely. “You can make those at my place any time.”
“You’re-“ he paused, as though not quite believing it. “You’re inviting me to your apartment? As in, not during Sister Night?”
“Well, it’s more of a family night now, since you’ve started coming over.” Kara said. “And of course you’re invited!”
You’ve been invited since you first came into my mind prison, she thought. There’s no way you wouldn’t be. I just needed to properly extend the invitation.
I should’ve done it before you left, but now that you’ve come back, it’s better late than never.
“In that case, when should I arrive?” he asked. “I did make more, though I thought all of them at once would arouse suspicion.”
“Is tonight good?”
“Tonight is perfect.” Querl said. “At 8?”
“Yeah. And, um… Brainy?”
“What is it, Kara?”
“You brighten my day too.”
“Thank you.” He answered, voice an octave higher for a moment. “I will see you later.”
“Later, Brainy.” She said, reluctantly hanging up the phone. Wishing they could talk more about everything- this plan of theirs, especially, and how her heart had skipped a beat when she read the Love on his note.
But she had to work, and seeing him again would be well worth the wait.
