What of it?

@hi-fidelitea’s prompt: Lucy and the Ghoul arguing about the most Low-Stakes issue at the most High-Stakes moment

So this is the first one I’ve done for this prompt, I do have a second idea hahaha - also I thought I’d start releasing one or two of these before I go away, because I can’t resist!

If anyone has any other prompts, just let me know!

“Ghoul?”

Of all the… The Ghoul turned towards the annoying, distracting woman he’d invited along, and gave her a look that he intended to mean - Really? Now?

She couldn’t wait just an hour or so before asking him some inane question? She really had to pipe up, now, after he’d all but dragged her and the pup into the small storage cupboard, obviously trying to keep them hidden?

The room was dark, the light above them obviously non-functional - even if this place still had power, the bulb was long since broken - but her Pipboy lit the room in an almost eerie green light that left a sickened glow on her skin.

Had one of the Cazadors stung her?

She was pale but flushed, eyes narrowed, and he hated the annoying spike of worry that surged through him as he gave her a quick once-over. She wasn’t bleeding, as far as he could tell. There was no blood on that monkey-suit of hers, or, well, no more blood, anyhow.

If the poison was eating at her, it needed to do so quietly. He’d have an antivenom down her throat soon enough, but right now, they just had to be quiet. He could hear their enemy in the distance, slamming around, and turned back towards the door to try and glance through and see how close it had gotten. The glass had shattered long enough ago that it no longer crunched underfoot, that it had been replaced by thin slats of wood, nailed into place. He couldn’t see much through the rotting gaps, but if he squinted, maybe…

“Is that-”

He turned again, glaring fully, this time; his train of thought vanishing in lieu of survival-driven panic. Were they not taught common fucking sense down in that vault? He put his finger over his lips to try and mime for her to shut the fuck up, and held his goddamn breath as he tried to pay attention to the world outside their humid little cell.

She glared at him in turn, snorting through her nose like he was being ridiculous, when all he was trying to do was keep them both - and the dog - alive long enough to make a half-way decent attempt at catching up with her dad.

“-My finger?”

Oh.

He’d been wondering when she’d finally notice, though, considering it was held up against his lips, right in her face, it was only a matter of time.

She’d lowered her voice, at least, practically a hiss at this point, but her indignation was clear as day.

It was his turn to snort, to huff air out of his nose and inflame her even further. This close, he could see the dilation of her pupils and the angry rush of blood into her cheeks; and liked it just as much as he had every other damn time he’d managed to provoke the reaction.

“And what of it?”

He turned back towards the window, looking for a shadow, a silhouette, movement, even. He couldn’t see much, but he could hear just fine, and knew it’d scarper, eventually. Wander away, taking its young and their equally sharp talons with it.

“What of it, I, well, um,”

He turned back towards her, eyebrow raised, and back to the window.

“Spit it out then,” he murmured, keeping his tone under control. “Don’t go making threats you ain’t gonna see through, vaultie.”

She hadn’t been threatening him, not really, but as he glanced back he could see those expressive, wide eyes, could see how annoyed she was.

It suited her.

“I am not threatening you!”

He didn’t turn, waving his hand - the one with her finger - beside him to tell her to shut the fuck up. He could see it, outside.

Maybe.

“Actually,” she continued, all but verbally stomping on the ground, “maybe I am threatening you! Maybe I’ll take it back, what do you have to say about that?”

Why had they put these slats so fucking close to oneanother? He could barely see, even at a squint, and whilst the dog was perfectly still and quiet beside them both, the woman in the room with him wasn’t, and if he could hear her rapid-fire complaining behind him then the Deathclaw out there certainly could.

She grabbed at him - fingers sinking into the fabric of his coat, and pulled him away from the door to face her, instead.

“And that’s why I’m going to ask that you give it back, otherwise I’ll be forced to take it, well, by force!”

“Shut the fuck up.”

They spoke in unison, her tone angry, his moreso.

Hers a lot louder than his, even if her words petered out towards the end

He heard the roar outside, and slapped his hand - the one with her finger - against her mouth, pushing her away from the door until her back hit the wall behind them both.

“Finders keepers, Vaultie,” he hissed, leaning in close enough that his scarred lips brushed against the shell of her ear. “You took my finger, I took yours. It ain’t my fault you didn’t think to hang onto mine. This here finger, I’ve grown attached. The only way you’re gettin’ it back is by biting it off again and believe me, now is not the time.”

He pulled back, glaring down at her - expression stuttering slightly when he saw how wide her eyes were, how blown her pupils had become. The realisation of her arousal hit like a freight train. She… liked it. The room was small, but felt miniscule as he stared down at her, looking up at him like something from…

The dog barked, and he all but screamed at her to shut up, body tense, confusing interaction shoved to the side.

Postponed, but not forgotten.

These two were gonna get him fucking killed.

Claws ripped through the ancient metal of the door, and he pulled his guns from his holsters, gesturing for Lucy to do the same.

“This is why I work alone.”

7-to shut them up

Hancock was a patient man.

Really. He was.

Well. Normally.

The times where he lost his patience was very few and far between and it took quite a bit of prodding to make the coolest ghoul in the ‘Wealth blow his top.

Take right now, for example.

He and Doll were once again in the Railroad hideout, her and Tom and Des discussing their next move against the Institute while he sat aside and minded his business.

Until Deacon decided now was the time to stroll over, his sunglasses giving off a gleam as he smiled.

“Well, if I woulda known you two were droppin’ by, I woulda put my pompadour on and made myself presentable”, he grinned, taking the spot beside him. Hancock tipped his hat to him and lit a cigarette.

“Oh, please. Don’t get all dolled up on our account”, he chuckled, breathing out a cloud of smoke.

“Aww, but that’s what I do. I could be anyone ya wanna see at the moment. A drifter? A lady? Maybe a little old woman? Ya know, I was a ghoul for a bit too, right?”

Hancock let’s out a breath through his nose and lightly throws his brows up.

“So I’ve been told”. His responses are short and sweet. He means nothing by it, of course, but he can’t deny being tired and sore and in need of a drink and maybe a couple of chems after the long day he and Doll had and evidently, Deacon is not quite able to read his mood at the moment.

“Hell, I could be Des for a bit, too. Ooh, you know what I haven’t tried yet? Copy catting Whisper. Been meaning to try that here soon”, he says, tilting his head towards Doll, making Hancock’s brows go higher. The man is chatty today, perhaps from not being able to go out and about since they’ve had to batten down the hatches against both the Institute and the Brotherhood.

“Who knows? I could always use a little more hair”, and he slides his hand over his head dramatically.

Hancock rubs his eyes tiredly. He gets it. He really does.

But he’s just too tired for it. Deacon turns his head to him, continuing to chat on about his next disguise line up and what he plans to do with them and Hancock just can’t handle much more. He’s been tossed around, shot at, almost blown to hell, knocked around, and blue balled for longer than he wants to say and his nerves are a little more frayed than normal.

Before Deacon can continue his chatter, Hancock reaches over with one hand, grabbing his jaw and firmly laying a kiss on him, stopping his incessant talking for a few seconds before letting go of him and returning to his cigarette, sighing at the silence that follows.

Doll passes by them, unaware of what had occurred and began heading back out of the hideout, causing Hancock to follow behind her.

“Good talk, brother”, he says, flicking away the butt of his cigarette. “We’ll have to do it again some time”.

Deacon remains in his spot, still quiet in his confusion but he had to admit.

Hancock wasn’t a bad kisser.

Aint Nothing but a Hound Dog

Prompt- Recently divorced Cooper Howard goes to volunteer at a local animal shelter to help his PR and falls head over heels for Lucy. The romcom vibes would be *Chefs Kiss*

The coffee in his hand was burnt, but hey, wasn’t everything? Ill-tasting and bitter, the cheap caffeine felt like the perfect reflection of his post-divorce life. It was earlier than he’d been up in weeks, and there was a chill in the air that spoke of encroaching winter, and he was in the waiting room of a dog shelter. Not an audition or a makeup chair, but a dog shelter.

He could still hear his agent's voice over the phone, tinny and insistent, urging him to do some charity work, to come join the open day. 

To improve his image.

His image, like he’d done anything wrong.

Like he’d been the one to try and orchestrate the end of the world.

No one knew that, of course, just that he’d ‘abandoned’ his wife and child for a life of solitude bachelorism. That he was the antithesis of the family values the country held near and dear, that Vault-Tec had dropped him, that he was this year’s villain.

They still ran the advert, of course, not that he’d seen a cent in-

“Mr Howard?”

He turned towards the voice and smiled automatically at the young woman. She was pretty, all big eyes and a bigger smile, body tucked behind the heavy door she’d appeared through.

Her head cocked, and he coughed, realising she expected him to answer, to-

“I mean, I know it’s you, obviously,” she laughed, a hint of nervousness in the sound, and the memory of those encroaching bombs miraculously retreated. “I’m Lucy. Are you ready to get started? You’re welcome to finish your coffee, there’s a buzzer on the desk that you can press when you’re done! Usually someone is manning it, and there will be, I promise, it’s just Bert called in sick and-“

He stood, draining his paper cup and throwing the remains into the trash, followed her through the door - her flurried words vanishing into the sudden, surprising din. He’d been able to hear the animals in the waiting room, obviously, but the door blocked far more sound than he realised.

“If you need me to handle the desk,” he offered, raising his voice over hers, over the dogs that barked around them, “I can do that.”

She stopped so quickly he nearly walked into her, and looked at him, shocked.

“Thank you so much, if… if my brother lets us down, I’ll maybe… but no, he said he’d be here, so,”

She finished the rambling, half-incoherent sentence with a laugh, and he could feel the stress that radiated from her. How had she ended up here all alone, shouldering, well, everything? She was used to the place, that much was obvious - she moved around the various signs and hazards with ease, like she could do this in her sleep. 

Given how the dogs calmed as she approached, he wondered if maybe she did.

“We just need to collect the dogs up before we get going, check for anyone who doesn’t look well enough to join in… Anyone who needs morning medication is on the wall, but I got here early and made sure that was all sorted and breakfast was done, so-”

Oh, this girl had people pleaser written all over her. Cute as a button, a streak of mud on one cheek and dog hair all over her legs. She kept talking as they walked, introducing him to the different barking, excited dogs, and he couldn’t help but smile. 

Maybe he wouldn’t fire his agent after all.

“Okie doki! You start on that end, and together we’ll gather the dogs up and take them outside, okay?”

He let his eyes linger on the softness of her smile as she spoke. This wasn’t Hollywood, this enthusiasm was real; and brighter than anything he’d seen. How wasn’t a place like this brimming with volunteers, when someone like this looked after them?

…He’d been single too long. 

He’d been on a few dates, of course he had, but every single one felt wrong. Like he was moving too slow, or too fast, or like they wanted the Cooper Howard they saw at the pictures, rather than the one who simply wanted to exist. 

Once you lose the riches, the house, the suits… patience and indulgence go too, or so he’d learned. People used to stand around him, smiling and nodding whilst he talked about films and his daughter’s playground arguments and whatever scripts he’d turned down, but now?

He was yesterday’s news.

Today’s uncertain, almost pitying glance.

Still, the sun was bright as he followed her, dogs at his heels, tumbling this way and that as they surged into the already-prepared playpens, fence posts staked into the earthen ground below. He took the seniors, carefully leading them towards their penned off area, nodding awkwardly as she shouted over that he was doing a great job.

Was she always this cheery?

The question plagued him all morning. He’d worked with so many people, over the years, but Lucy had the energy of a cheerleader and the presence of a kindergarten teacher. She handled it all, overwhelmed, overworked, but… happy. Enviably so. 

When was the last time he’d felt that good about, well… anything?

He watched her work, watched the ease she had with the children, the way the animals responded to her; and felt mildl useless as he stood for photos and helped kids pick leashes, til an equally sad cup of coffee found its way into his hand. 

Janey would love this. 

He’d have to talk her out of every goddamn dog they saw, but she’d love it.

He knelt, knees cracking as they lowered into the soft, moist grass, and he couldn’t help but laugh as the ugliest thing he’d ever seen all but charged him. It was small, and its coat was growing in ugly-as-sin patches, but it climbed up into his lap all the same and threatened to shove its tongue right up his nose.

No dogs in the vaults.

What kind of stupid rule was that, anyway? He couldn’t leave his best friend behind whilst he sheltered underground, safe and sound. Couldn’t leave the lad to face the radiation alone, scared…

“You’re a kisser, ain't you?” he laughed, sad thoughts vanishing in an instant. “My lad’s gonna be all jealous when I get home, I hope you know that, I-”

“She doesn’t usually like men, you know,”

He turned towards the voice, unable to resist returning the soft smile Lucy so graciously offered him. It was smaller than the ones from before, talking of genuine happiness rather than exhausting cheer.

“This one? Impossible.”

She hummed. “Maybe it’s the films she watches when she comes home with me at night.”

He scoffed, the exhale of air ruffling the sparse, long hair on the pup’s head. A kid ran past, but they were heading towards the fluffier dogs, not ones like this. 

“Oh, she-”

“Missy,”

“Missy likes a western, does she?”

What was he… oh fuck, he was flirting. It had practically been an accident, some suave part of him leaking through the cracks in his awkward, post-divorced armour.

Lucy smiled, leaning back against the fence, absently stroking the head of a retriever as it tried to shove its nose into her pocket. 

“I’d say they’re her favourites.”

Was she flirting back? 

“I’d heard they were too,” he shrugged, “...old-fashioned.”

What was he doing? What was she doing?

“I hear there’s one on at the drive-in tonight,” she smiled, turning and pushing back the dog with a laugh, “if you’d like to see what all the fuss is about?”

He nodded, feeling dumbstruck. Dumbstruck and out-manoeuvred.

“Perfect, it’s a date.”

38- because they’re running out of time

Her chin rested against the thumbs of her folded hands, elbows balanced on her knees while she looked up at Gage’s back. Her jaw clenched tightly as she squeezed her eyes shut.

This was the last situation she expected to be in but with the hits continuing to roll in, she couldn’t afford to be surprised anymore.

She never intended on being the Raider King. All she did was follow a Nuka World signal. How was she supposed to know it would lead to this?

And now, here she was, making herself sick over an unavoidable decision.

She appreciated Gage. She really did and she wasn’t too proud to admit that if it weren’t for him, she probably wouldn’t have made it through the end of the gauntlet but what he was proposing and asking her to do...

She couldn’t do it.

There was a plethora of shitty things she had done in her life, but what he was asking of her now was far more detrimental than telling someone an ugly outfit looked great or their awful haircut looked good. Every settlement in the Commonwealth had been settlements she had helped reclaim and rebuild for the people to reclaim their sense of livelihood and pride in both survival and the people willing to help them.

And he was asking her to jeopardize all of that by bringing the Nuka World Raiders to them.

She swallowed hard and looked from her bouncing knee once again to Gage’s back. It was evening right now and he stood in front of the windows with a bottle in hand, sipping on the soda in it.

It was outright exhausting how long she spent racking her brain for a while at around this, but soon, the realization hit her in the center of her gut. Whether it be first or last...

She would have to kill Gage.

It couldn’t be immediate or out of the clear blue or else she’d be one man armying her way through an entire park of headcases but the point still stood. Before the end of it, she would have to kill the man that helped her survive Nuka World. Her thumbs rubbed circles against her temples and she did her best to swallow down her emotions, keep her eyes from watering. If she could keep them contained within the park, she could perhaps keep him alive but if he insisted on expanding into the wealth, that would have to be it.

A contingency plan needed to be put in place and soon. Now, in fact.

Soon, she rose from her spot on the chair and approached Gage, looking out over the park beside him, watching the rabble below drinking and partying.

“Gotta hand it to ‘em”, he said, wiping his mouth with his thumb. “They’re a bunch of absolute crazy bastards but ain’t nobody party the way Nuka raiders do”. A chuckle leaves him as he continues to watch. Doll nods, crossing her arms.

“Yea, I noticed...Gage”, she said, anxiety rising in her throat. He nods his head her way, eyes still looking out below. “I never did thank you for helping me survive the gauntlet”. A shrug rattles his armor and he takes another sip of his drink.

“Ain’t no thing, Boss. Had a feelin’ you’d be good for the job”, he said. “Don’t be gettin’ all soft on m-“

Her hands on his face cut him off and he’s forced to turn his head in her direction, allowing her to kiss him firmly, hands locking behind the nape of his neck. It throws him off enough that he freezes for a moment before reaching over with his free hand and wrapping it around her waist.

The clock was now ticking. She would have to plan on how best to take out all the other gangs and him. And she felt even worse for it.

But she could take solace in the fact that he would fight back...

This takes place before the one where they make out in the hallway

The crackle of the teleporter in front of them was already intimidating as it was. The fact it lead to the Institute (or at least they hoped it did) only made it that much more terrifying.

And it only made it worse that Doll was going on her own.

Hancock’s growing pile of cigarette butts only grew, watching Doll speak to Tinker Tom and Desdemona with a lot more finality and seriousness rather than the lighthearted banter they tried to maintain.

They really did it. They finally found a way in and she was going alone.

Another butt was flicked to the ground before he stuck another cigarette in his mouth, lighting it and taking a deep breath.

It was absolute bullshit as far as he was concerned but he also knew the machine wasn’t powerful enough to take them both. It had to be her.

He chuckled to himself. Of course it did. Who the fuck else was carrying the weight of the Commonwealth on their goddamn back like a pack mule? It sure as shit wasn’t anyone else.

His eyes followed her stiff movements as she nodded one more time to Des before heading over to the driveway he was standing under and towards the weapons bench. Her jacket was promptly tossed onto the power armor rack and she let out a deep breath, leaning over the bench as her head hung.

“...this is it”, she mumbled. To him or no one, he wasn’t sure but she had his attention anyway. A couple steps had him by her side, hand rubbing against her back.

“It sure is, sister”. Had he something better to say, he would’ve said it as many times as she needed, but he was at a loss for words of any type. He watched they way her fists clenched over and over and how her shoulders held all her tension.

“...are you going to be okay while I’m gone?” She asks, finally looking in his direction.

That was a good question. He had an answer, but it wasn’t a really good one. He’d be fine and he knew it but he wouldn’t like it.

“‘Course I will be”, he smiles anyway, and her brows furrow but she returns it anyway.

“Don’t really believe it, but I’m gonna hold you to that”.

Another small silence settles over them and his hand slowly reaches over to her own, taking it into his and giving it a firm squeeze. The warmth he emitted made her feel safe for a moment and he tugs her to him, encasing her in his arms.

“You’re gonna come back to me, yea?” He asks her gently, his lips pressed to her hair. Her face stays buried in his neck as she nods.

“Count on it”. A sigh leaves her and she turns her head back to the teleporter. “It’s now or never, Hancock”. She slowly pulls away from him, much to his reluctance, and pulls her jacket back on, holstering her weapons.

They make their way back over to the teleporter and the crackle is no less intimidating than it was before but Doll shakes out her shoulders and steps forward.

“Here goes nothing”, she quietly murmurs, but Hancock grabs her hand silently.

“Wait...”

A confused look crosses over her face at how his gaze seems to be so downcast, as if he’s fighting with himself in his own head but he looks back up at her and steps close, taking her face in his hands and firmly pressing his lips to her forehead.

“Good luck, Doll. Come back to me safe. With that little boy in tow”, he murmurs against her skin. She leans up to him and presses her lips to his cheek.

“One way or another”.

You’re alright, darlin’. Danse is a really interesting character. He makes it a point to stay so loyal to the BOS even to his detriment and I think it’s both fascinating and disturbing. Poetry.

Anyway! Here you go, dear!

I decided to go with 33 because I feel like points can be made with this one. Keep in mind I do not condone any type of forced contact irl that would cause anybody an issue. This is a fictional work.

33. Forcefully

The periods of time when Hancock stayed in Goodneighbor while Doll went out on her own were not common but made up for it by length. Normally, he never questioned what it was she was up to in her time away, but currently, he couldn’t help but have his questions when he found himself looking at a towering figure in what was clearly Brotherhood of Steel armor, helmet off to reveal a clean, military-esque cut.

From the armor, to the hair, to the uptight behavior, and constant condemnation of what he deemed ‘non-humans’, he couldn’t stand the guy, much less fathom how the hell Doll even ended up making ‘friends’ with him.

Doll said his name was Danse. Pfft. Stupid fuckin’ name. Whatever the hell his name was, he spent as much time glaring at him, Nick, and Strong as they did him. It was wildly laughable.

Especially considering he was a synth.

He was the thing he hated most and yet, still maintained the audacity to look down at him and his friends as if he had room to talk. Never mind that the organization he dedicated his life to was ready to kill him on the spot had Doll not intervened. Oh no, that was all fine and dandy and well.

But they weren’t. And that just made Hancock seethe.

It doesn’t help that the man (or not) insists on continuously jabbing at him and why Doll keeps him around, he doesn’t know, but his fuse is only so long and when he refers to them as ‘things’, as ‘abominations’, as ‘non-humans’ considering he willingly became ghoul and Nick was once human, too, he can’t stop himself when he stands chest to chest with the taller man.

“Alright, crew cut. Let’s get this clear and outta the way ‘cause even I’m gettin’ pretty sick of your mouth at this point”, Hancock growls. “You don’t like me and I don’t like you. That’s fine. But the snarky shit either stops here or we’re gonna have a pretty big scrap on our hands”. Danse frowns down at Hancock.

“I would suggest you back away from me before I decide to take you up on your offer, filthy ghoul”, he says back. Hancock clenches his jaw but slowly, a smirk curls over his lips.

“Funny you should say that considerin’ you ain’t human either, pretty boy”. He knows it’s a low blow but it’s the only thing that manages to shut the soldier’s mouth at the moment. “You might as well join the fuckin’ club. You’re as filthy as me by that standard!”

A low growl leaves Danse and his fists clench at his sides as Hancock stands there, smirking at the fact he’s made the ex-soldier’s blood boil.

“I would suggest you stop speaking now”, but Hancock rolls his eyes and his smirk grows into something malicious. He’s not one to be an asshole unprovoked and right now, he’s been good and provoked. He had been since Doll brought him back to the settlement and he behaved himself anyway, despite the shitty things he would say but enough was enough and Hancock wasn’t taking it anymore.

“Oh? Want me to shut up now? Sick of hearin’ the truth? Well, alright then. How about I shut us both up, huh?”

Danse is angry and confused and unable to process what happens when Hancock reaches up and yanks him down by his once neat hair, now disheveled between the ghouls fingers. The pain in his scalp distracts him for a moment and when he processes it, he realizes that the ghoul has tightly pressed his thin lips against his own and his eyes widen in panic. Hancock quickly shoves him away and Danse quickly wipes his hand over his mouth, speechless when he looks back up in fury at the ghoul.

“Not so high and mighty now, huh? You’re a synth that’s been kissed by a ghoul. Now, keep your shitty comments to yourself before I knock ya down another peg”, he says, lighting a cigarette and walking away.

Danse’s teeth clench together tightly and his breathing is heavy and uneven as his balled up fists hang at his sides. His eyes dart from Hancock’s fading form to the ground to himself and then his surroundings.

This wasn’t the BOS. He was no longer a Paladin. Majority of the people in this settlement held no love for the brotherhood and he was only alive because Doll saved his ass. His frustration welled up inside but what did it matter?

And so, he simply turns to his power armor and works on it. Fixing it. Modifying it. Cleaning it.

Because it’s the only piece of identity he’s got left.
