“Do you really think I can land the quad flip?” Yuuri asks on one of those nights where everything is quiet and heavy and he collapses into bed two hours earlier than usual. He’s lying on his side, curled up into a ball so tight that he looks smaller than normal, more fragile. His knees are brought up to his chest and his eyes remain open, staring straight ahead at the wall to his left.
Victor pulls Yuuri against him by putting one arm around his waist, but his fiancé doesn’t let down his emotional shields. “Of course you can.”
At that, Yuuri doesn’t say anything. Victor has seen him like this on far, far too many occasions--lost in his own head, in his own thoughts. “Maybe the power of reading can help,” he suggests quietly, and squeezes Yuuri’s hip.
“The power of reading?” Yuuri asks, sounding more curious than caring.
“I’ll read you a story. Once upon a time, there was a Japanese figure skater.”
Yuuri sighs. “Did this skater have a name?”
Victor hums. “Yes, but that’s not important. Once upon a time there was a Japanese figure skater who didn’t think he could do a quad flip, and so he was lying in a hotel room bed with his coach and love of his life, when his coach told him he’d tell him a story. And do you know how the story ends?”
He turns around in Victor’s arms to meet his eyes. “How?”
“By the Japanese figure skater going to bed because it’s midnight. Goodnight, Yuuri.” He leans backwards to flick the lamp off, then pulls Yuuri tighter against his chest.
Yuuri laughs. “Goodnight, Victor.”
