movie night 🍿
(halfway through a star wars marathon. bob and mickey are having a great time! the rest of the daggers… well.)
PAYBACK & FANBOY // Top Gun: Maverick
How I like to imagine the daggers all got their callsigns:
(Let’s get the obvious ones first)
Maverick: The meaning of the word is a single-minded or unorthodox person, so obviously it’s because of his reckless flying and blah blah blah. We know.
Rooster: He likes to take this slow, and he’s stuck on his ‘perch’. He’s a mother hen. Or at least he was in flight school, partly because he was older then most of his classmates and they sort of looked to him for guidance and wisdom (and he spent it all panicking and going “I’m only four years older then you!!”)
Hangman: The movie says that it’s because he always leaves his wingman, but I like to take everything about my favs and make it really sad. SO in my mind, hangman was still pretty early on in his career in the navy, he was stationed with Javy and a bunch of strangers (as it is in the navy I suppose) and while on a mission he made sure to stay on top of the speed outlines (or a bit faster then needed) and his wingman panicked trying to keep up, sped up their own plane, and ended up crashing and burning (rooster heard about this through a friend he had in flight school who was on that squadron, hence his crashing and burning comment in the hard deck), that day still haunts Jake because he blames himself.
Now onto ones I solely made up when I watched the movie for the like 12th time.
Phoenix: Everyone else gets embarrassing or sad stories, but phoenix is too badass in my mind she deserves a good one. I imagine her in her first assigned group and they decide to do team building games, and land on capture the flag. It’s a small forest, she sneaks onto the enemy’s side, and sets a small controlled fire to distract everyone (not enough to do damage, not one that some good pilots couldn’t easily put out). She gets the flag, and makes her way back to her teams base. Someone ends up doing a sports commentator impression and yells “like a phoenix she rises from the ashes” then they parade her around on their shoulders yelling “PHOENIX! PHOENIX! PHOENIX!” Because she won them the game.
Bob: It does actually stand for something. Not ‘Baby On Board’ like hangman said. It means Bawling Over Bugs. He stepped on a caterpillar once, ONCE, and he hasn’t lived down the fact he cried while kneeling in front of it. It was very very dramatic. He does tell people that Bob is just short for Robert though, just so he doesn’t have to tell people that very embarrassing story.
Halo: Her class in flight school got very very drunk the night of their last class and they played truth or dare. She got dared to do her best impression of a celebrity she can’t even remember the name of anymore, so she hopped up on a table and began slurring out a few sentences. She ended up slamming her head into the middle lightbulb in the fixture above her so there was just a ring of lights around her. She did in fact end up in the emergency room getting stitches after she fell off the table shortly after.
Yale and Harvard: They were put together as wingmen right off the bat when they entered the Navy. They talked about life and ended up on the topic of universities. One said Yale was the best Ivy League, the other said Harvard was. They ended up is a massive argument that was stopped hours later by a higher up telling them they’re not 5 and shouldn’t be arguing like they are. That was only after they dragged everyone else around them into the debate. They were then on known as Yale and Harvard, ‘The Ivies’. But they did end up great friends (dating) and have outlawed any mentions of Ivy League schools.
Fanboy: He’s genuinely just the biggest geek ever. Can infodump about superheroes for HOURS, knows the entire napoleon dynamight script by heart, big fan of Disney and star wars, has a comic book collection that takes up an entire room back at his apartment, Spider-Man phone case and Lock Screen, knows way more about the history of the world and little fun facts then the average person should know, loves any and all musicals, had an obsession with mythology during high school, actively keeps up with many many celebrities and knows so much about some of them it’s scary, and could draw out the schematics of any plane his parents listed by the time he was 9. He had way too much free time as a child, and is probably undiagnosed.
Payback: He got in a prank war with somebody else in the Navy, and as much as people speculate he lost, he won. He found out the other guy was scared of slimy insects and filled his bed with worms. They ended up as good friends, but now everyone else knew not to do anything irrational towards Payback because he can and WILL find out your fear and exploit it. He loves a good prank.
Coyote: He always tries to convince people it’s cause he’s scary, and a menace and night, and not afraid to attack anything that moves. He’s lying. In flight school his class (with Jake in it keep in mind) had the bright idea to do a buzzfeed quiz of ‘what is my fursona’. He got a coyote. Jake is the only person who remembers the story of how he got it. He promised Javy he wouldn’t tell anyone out of fear of losing his lifelong friendship. Jake also finds it ironic because Javy has had a fear of coyotes since he was 6 years old, after he could hear them howling outside Jake’s familys’ ranch during a sleepover. He also doesn’t bring that up.
Fritz: He had comically terrible luck with technology during his first few years in the Navy, not plane tech or anything, just seemingly every single tv out there. Every time he’d use a tv it’d start glitching a getting flashing line across it out of nowhere. Nobody knew how. Still there’s no explanation. But after enough times of people saying “Oh tvs on the Fritz again” they decided it was his fault and stuck him with the call sign Fritz.
Omaha: the actual name Omaha is from Native American culture, and means ‘those going against the wind or current’. In flight school Omaha never listened to the dumb shit his superiors and fellow classmates tried to convince him of. “We should get drunk and have one night stands”, they’re all in relationships and Omaha refused to do anything morally wrong. “I hate gay people, they shouldn’t have rights”, so actually Omaha is queer. “You need respect your teachers and higher ups”, respect is earned, not given. He’d always disagree with the ways others were acting, or speaking, or going about their lives. He was very out of place and never faltered on his morals. And one of his Native American classmates told him “you should be called Omaha, you’re very against the way other people group together and act”. The name just sort of sticks. He doesn’t really like telling the story, he feels it makes him sound pretentious or entitled.
- sorry if there’s any spelling or grammar mistakes it’s 2:45 am rn. I’m too tired to proofread or fix anything. -
been distracted by them lately but i’m obsessed with the permanent dagger squad so here’s a very rough draft of some of my (overlapping) hcs for them
(someone please talk to me about them pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease)
A tribute to one of the best fanfictions I have ever read:
Don’t worry, you don’t have to know West Wing to read it <3
I can’t wait for the last chapter!!!
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Okay so we have
1. “Important press Conference coming up!”
2. “The enemy has invaded the territory - wait no, the marines are the good ones:)”
3. “Quality Time for the family ❤️”
4. Something official (I may have pasted a small extract of the first chapter in there as a filler *-*)
5. “Home Office on a new level, I guess…”
6. “It’s been quite a while and you’re still going strong - happy birthday to my wingman in the air and on the ground @chiefofstaff (thanks for still putting up with me)”
7. “Small Talk can be just as important as conference meetings”
8. “You leave the room for five minutes and your staff starts destroying state property (just kidding, I love them all)”
9. “The vacation where you meet the extended family”
I know that you wouldn’t see most of that irl, but it’s Pete and he’s Maverick, what can I do?
Here are part 2 and 3 ^^
Fanboy growing out his hair on leave and Payback going absolutely insane over it
why do hollywolf and fanback give off the same vibes
