Major Valice Universes: Forgotten Vows Verse

And here's the other major universe of the moment, the one that's getting most of my creative efforts right now:

Title: The Forgotten Vows Verse Synopsis: After setting Emily free that cold January night, Victor Van Dort thought his life was going to return to normal. Fate, however, had other plans. Almost before he knew it, his engagement to Victoria Everglot was broken, Pastor Galswells decried him as a devil-worshipper, and his parents accused him of being completely insane. Their desperate attempts to cure him eventually led them to London’s East End and one Dr. Angus Bumby. . .and Victor to a young lady named Alice Liddell. History: This one evolved right here on my tumblr. Back when I was first coming up with ideas for the Travelers Verse, I made a post stating about how, in that verse, Nell and William briefly flirted with the idea of sending Victor to Dr. Bumby, but ended up deciding against it. And right at the end, I mentioned an AU of the verse where they did and Victor ended up in “Alice: Madness Returns.”

The AU verse quickly became the main verse. I made another post detailing my ideas of how Victor would fit into that world, then started writing little fanfic snippets from it, and then – then, about then my friend Rose introduced me to the tumblr RP scene. And I decided that the Victor from this verse would be fun to play. And thus was born Forgotten Vows, so-named because a) I like naming my Victors things that relate to quirks of theirs, and b) because it fit in well with the basic plot of Bumby eventually getting his claws in Victor’s brain. Fun was had in RP land, he gained an Alice, chatted with lots of people, and slowly I decided that he needed a proper backstory. And after lots of planning, dithering, and wondering what to call shit, I started writing “Losing You.” As of this writing, I’m within a few chapters of the end of “Finding You,” the second story of the verse. Yeah -- big-ass universe, right? The main difference between this and Secundus is that Secundus is one big story with lots and lots of little ones at the moment; while this is going to be a series of fairly big stories. Also, I need lots and lots of titles. (Any ideas?)

Major Valice Universes: Secundus

Back when I first started up this tumblr, I believe I talked about the three "main" universes I had for my Victor/Alice fanfic -- the "Solicitor's Ward"-verse (where an AMA-only Alice happens to invade the events of Corpse Bride), the Secundus-Verse, and the Travelers-Verse (where Victor and Alice end up meeting after the events of both their canons and discover an ability to visit various different worlds). I even had three separate posts detailing the potential offspring of each world.

My, how times have changed, haven't they? "Solicitor's Ward" is dead in the water (I blame "Alice: Madness Returns"), and Travelers has been dropped in favor of Forgotten Vows (funny how an idea I once called horrible has won the day in terms of writing). So I figured I ought to give you a proper update on which universes I now consider "major" for fanfic-writing purposes. Let's start with the only survivor of the original three:

Name: Secundus

Synopsis: It is a world ruled by Mad Science, but that never affected Victor Van Dort. He lived in the almost oppressively normal town of Burtonsville, leading a simple if privileged life. Son of the nouveau riche cannery owners, Victor expected his world to remain simple, dull, and boring. But when he accidentally came across the steam train in the woods outside town, his entire life got turned upside-down. Now he has to adjust to the Mad Science Capital of the World -- and perhaps discover what fate really has in store for him. History: I've been a fan of steampunk for years now – ever since I discovered Phil Foglio's excellent webcomic "Girl Genius." The melding of Victorian style and sensibility with modern-day technology grabbed my imagination and ran with it. So it’s honestly kind of surprising that it took me until 2010 to come up with a NaNoWriMo project featuring a steampunk universe. When it did, though, look out – I started planning this monster out in JANUARY of that year. My main fandom love had recently started to shift from BTTF to Corpse Bride, and I was eager to write a story with Victor as the main character (or, well, intentionally main character – he’s kind of taken over a good chunk of the story in “The Tale,” another incomplete NaNo project). The idea of doing a steampunk variation of his universe sounded like a blast. It quickly grew into another crossover idea, since I'm a) apparently incapable of writing a NaNo without Doc and Marty making an appearance, and b) a slave to my crossover OTP of Victor/Alice. I started planning out the world and its inhabitants, and by November 2010, I was raring to go.

Of course, as my NaNos always do, I completed the challenge without finishing the story. However, unlike with my other NaNos, I didn’t completely lose interest once the race in November was over. So I kept writing, and eventually I managed to bring it to a decent conclusion. This is the first NaNo I’ve completed without needing a second year to write the other half. I also made an RP character for it – Butterfly Boy, the AU version of Victor. His presence on LiveJournal created lots of other fanfic. . .and now I’ve got sequel ideas. This universe is far from complete. Crossovers: There's a LOT of cameos from tons of different fandoms (everything from "Portal" to "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" to "My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic"), but the main three are -- Back To The Future/Corpse Bride/American McGee's Alice (with some Madness Returns flavoring). The strongest "secondary" fandoms are "How To Train Your Dragon," "Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs"(movie), and "Wallace & Gromit," since I was way into those three at the time of initial writing. Pairings:

Stories: Talk about an easy category -- I've been trying to be organized with the LJ version of Butterfly Boy, so I've got a complete list of all the fanfic Secundus appears in. You can see it here: FanFic Listing

However, in the interest of completeness, the main stories are:

Secundus -- the start of the whole adventure, where Victor is taken to Secundus and discovers a life full of mad science

Secundus 2: Weird Weird West -- where Victor, Alice, Richard, Emily, Christopher and Victoria go to Hill Valley to attend their friend Marty's wedding -- but there's trouble on the horizon. . .

Secundus 3 -- still in the planning stages, but this one will be focusing on Victor and Alice's kids (Chester, Vincent & Lorina) and some sort of time travel mishap

The mini-stories in the fanfic listing linked above are generally set after "Secundus," and may contain some minor spoilers for "Secundus 2." There shouldn't be any spoilers for "Secundus 3."

In-Law Madness!

A fandom meme I just did on Forgotten Vows inspired me to go ahead and post this: a discussion on how I decided to make all my favorite characters related through their kids in my steampunk multiverse AU "Secundus." The three main fandoms involved are:

Back To The Future: Doc Brown, Clara Clayton, Marty McFly, Jennifer Parker

Corpse Bride: Victor Van Dort, Victoria Everglot, Emily Cartwell

American McGee's Alice: Alice Liddell, Richard Dodgson (Hatter), Sir Christopher Lloyd (White Knight)

Now, this is how they pair up and have kids:

Victor & Alice: Chester, Vincent & Lorina (twins)

Doc & Clara: Jules, Verne, Isaac

Marty & Jennifer: Douglas & Marlene (twins -- Douglas is Marty Junior, I just have a tendency to rename him)

Victoria & Christopher: Jonathan, Mabel

Richard & Emily: Charlotte (adopted)

Of those:

Vincent Van Dort marries Mabel Lloyd (Victor/Alice and Victoria/Christopher are in-laws)

Lorina Van Dort marries Douglas McFly (Victor/Alice and Marty/Jennifer are in-laws)

Marlene McFly marries Jules Brown (Marty/Jennifer and Doc/Clara are in-laws)

Jonathan Lloyd marries Charlotte Dodgson (Victoria/Christopher and Emily/Richard are in-laws)

So all of the main couples end up being in-laws with at least one other couple, and three of them are in-laws with two (V/A with both V/C and M/J, M/J with both V/A and D/C, and V/C with both V/A and E/R). Yeah, I like getting my favorite couples related!
