Hello, Flora here, and today I want to express some thoughts about @nocturnal-impala 's Princess Tutu Zwei.
There are some things I want to clear up before starting, mainly that I love princess tutu zwei. I adore it. It is one of the most wonderful projects I have ever been blessed with witnessing, and i am in awe of the creativity and passion that went into it, so much that it made me realize I have never been passionate or creative in my life. The artistic direction, the world building, the storylines, the characters old and new, simply marvelous. Now, why do I critique it? Because I love it. All works of art deserved to be thoroughly looked at, and questioned. I critique it BECAUSE it's good. Some of my points may seem nitpicky, and some I might even counter myself, but I just want to bring it all up all the same. Maybe the creator will counter my points, giving me newfound understanding of the show. Now without further ado, I shall begin.
It does it's job as a trailer wonderfully, introducing the characters, setting the mood, and such. It's a great trailer, but in comparison with the original trailer, there's a sense of loss. The original princess tutu sparkled with it's mysteriousness, and how simple and quiet everything was while being compelling and intriguing. In comparison, zwei feels overcrowded and confusing. There's too much going on. But I absolutely loved the references to the original.
There was no established time skip. I would've liked to see one, to judge how according fakir and ahiru's reactions were. But from how everything went down, I will guess that it's only been a month or a bit more.
It would've been nice to linger more on the town's freedom after the defeat of drosslemeyer. Linger on the open gates, linger on the normalcy, linger on people questioning things instead of going along with it. One way I would've liked to see that is with Ahiru having to start from the low point. The only reason she had a place at the school was because drosslemeyer wrote it so. But now with him gone, wouldn't she have to enroll and make her way by herself? But maybe Claudia's mysterious entrance explains that. The town is under someone's control again.
The opening storytale sequences have no correlation to the episode. In the original, the openings would shed some light over the episode, while also giving a new perspective to the overall story. Double meanings, if you will. The zwei openings are deep by themselves, but paired with the episode, don't seem to connect.
I wish Autor was given more attention. This isn't just a fault of Zwei, it's also a fault of the original. Both have done Autor a bit dirty. It feels like he's only there for exposition, and we never learn more about him. Why did he want to research? Who was he before? So much mystery. And how does he feel about Rue? You can't make him love her for one episode then never bring it up again. If the original didn't explore him, I hope zwei does. And honestly, I have an inkling it will. In the latest part, Autor seemed to be going through some turmoil. Could this be a hint to future episodes diving into his story deeper?
Nitpicky opinion, but I feel like Lillie has been watered down. She isn't as mean or drama loving. If anything, I feel like she's the rightful descendant of drosslemeyer, with her affinity for tragedy. Lillie they can never make me hate you.
On another note, there doesn't seem to be an established theme, an overall message to tie together all the other little messages. The original established it right from the beginning with one quote. The struggle against fate. Is it worth it to be your own person if there's so much pain that comes with it? While Zwei does have messages and morals, I wish there was one big theme that I can express generally to anyone I want to recommend it to. What is Zwei trying to say?
Here's another double criticism, for Zwei and the original. It adds characters at random and pretends they were always there. Like the mean girl. Gurl, excuse me, who are you? Acting so snobbish but ain't no one know you are. I wish it took the background characters (like, the background background characters. The one with no speaking role) and used them instead of bringing about new characters.
There's no running gag T^T the comedy is great but there has to be that one running joke that never gets old to really get me laughing (Nitpicky and not an actual criticism, more of an opinion).
If everyone remembers Ahiru, then why did they forget Rue and Mytho? Why didn't anybody ask "Hey, what happened to the guy we've been collectively simping for for the past few months?"
Also, isn't fakir supposed to be writing for them? In the whole of zwei I haven't seen him write anything for them, which would cause issues. He doesn't have to be writing for them all the time, but just once in a while to keep their story going. But then again, the original anime did leave it vague exactly how this whole thing works.
For the new story, the firebird and the soul egg, I wish we got to see more of it. It's just... kinda vague. Maybe we'll see more later.
For the fairies, they feel one dimensional. They're just there for plot, and whoever dances better gets them? The original had ahiru winning battles through analyzing her opponent and helping them through their problem. I would've liked to see some lessons learned through the fairies. I'm not saying there's none of the original therapeutic feel of the original, but it's just less, in a way.
Final point, vampire guy came out of left feild. I'm sorry. But I will never not be disoriented by his existence. At first I thought he was made by Dael to have a reason to introduce himself to ahiru and establish himself a friend, but then it was shown that nah, vampire guy just exists. We haven't seen much if him, but I really want to understand how he will play in. If I'm being honest, the story could've done without him, as it was already starting to get stuffy in here. Enough characters, please. Let us focus on the ones we got. But what do I know, maybe there's a higher purpose for him yet.
And that is all I have to say. Please, give Princess Tutu Zwei a watch, it's very good, and take my ramblings with a grain of salt as I'm the same person who, when not able to determine the exact axis the world in my story spins at, proceeded to rip it up and cry herself to sleep. I am way too focused for my own good. Goodbye, and Farwell.
