OMG, I FINALLY HAVE A TERM FOR THIS.
You can’t, for instance, say something is as basic as the missionary position in a world without missionaries. What about saying something is as swift and sharp as a guillotine’s blade? Well, did Dr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin exist in this world?
RIGHT?? Someone on the Tor re-reads pointed out that Kvothe uses the term "galvanic," which was actually named after scientist Luigi Galvani. And unlike Tolkien's world which uses a literary agent hypothesis/translation convention, I'm pretty sure Aturan is pretty much meant to be English, judging by the way he puts in fake etymologies for words like "vintage."
Fantasy is hard, y'all.
