Lunge feeding: a technique used by baleen whales that involves herding fish into a tight group, then lunging at their prey with open mouths.

These humpbacks found a school of fish that was being hunted already by shorebirds and sea lions. Most of the lunges are horizontal and occur under the water. Vertical lunge feeding happens when the whales diver underneath the school of fish, then lunges up and out of the water.

The Farallones are known as The Devil’s Teeth, jagged outcroppings and dangerous shoals 30 miles outside of the Golden Gate. Their most famous residents are seagulls and seals. There are stories, though, from those that have gotten close enough, of larger birds, carrying seal carcasses. Birds that have human faces.
