Despite not feeling well, this little boy woke up early on Saturday morning to help his father harvest some waxy corn for breakfast. I was tending the lettuce patch nearby and heard them talk about his father's childhood and how they also helped their parents in farm when they were kids 😊 I don't know what lies ahead for these kids, but right now we're doing our best to instill in the them a love for #nature , animals, and family. These #farmkids (children of neighbors in the farm) share our space on weekends and play with our boys. Sometimes when it gets too hot or they get bored running around or climbing trees, they borrow my 8-year-old's crayons and coloring books and work under the guava trees. Unlike all the other fruit trees in the garden, these guavas sort of just popped up out of nowhere. So I always tell these kids, be kind to the birds and the bats as they most probably are the ones who planted these trees for you. See how much you are enjoying their shade 😉😁 (they're like, "Yes, aunty..." ) . . Observing kids at play can be fun, and I'm enjoying the opportunity to provide a nurturing and supportive learning environment for them as they get along with our own children. Part of me is hoping they'd have beautiful childhood memories with our family. Picking fruits and veggies from the garden is very therapeutic. I discovered that 3 small radishes is more than enough to for six people. We made daikon radish salad, sauteed water spinach with oyster sauce, and blue butterfly flower tea. It seems turkeys aren't the best moms in the animal kingdom. One turkey mom abandoned these little ones in the bushes today; husband brought them home so we can keep them in a lighted cardboard box until they develop enough feathers to keep them warm. #lifeonthefarm isn't perfect. There will be disappointments and unmet expectations from time to time. I can't choose between my fur babies and my dream of raising free-range chickens, so here I am trying to figure out the best way to simultaneously have both 😭 . So here's C1 and C2, the orphaned Kabir chicks that we are now raising. They look happy and healthy in their cardboard box.
