Can we talk about the fatphobia in the wedding industry?! We went to a supposedly size inclusive boutique. Turns out that means up to size 10. And they griped about having to create a tux for one of the groomsmen who is bigger. The associate suggested I try losing weight before trying to plan a wedding. It was an entirely humiliating experience and tbh did make me get some cold feet because my fiance is perfect and this lady killed my self esteem.
Dear anon,
I'm so sorry this happened to you. This is supposed to be a happy and joyful time in your life. It will come with stress but this kind of stress is uncalled for.
They had no right to say anything about your weight or to make a fuss about being accommodating to your groomsman. This is their job and they should do it properly.
The wedding industry is heavily steeped in fatphobia. They have this idea that in order to "look your best" you have to be as far away from fat as possible. It's a horrible mindset and usually leads to disordered ways of eating/working out. It also puts undue pressure on people to conform to ever changing body standards. It's full on trash.
The truth is that fatness is not a deterrent to participating in milestone events. Be it a being a bride, groom, groomsmen...anything. There is nothing wrong with being fat. Nothing.
Now to you, I'm sorry this shook your resolve and made you question things. You found someone who loves you wholly. Someone who refuses to love you in bits and pieces. This alone is worth a grand celebration. There is nothing wrong with your body. There is nothing wrong about your body. You are a beautiful fat human being who should be treated with respect. Full stop. Remind yourself that you are so much more than someone who only sees your fatness. Speak love to you with every thought you have. If you can't find that within you, a therapist may be able to help you properly sort through the feelings and find a balance with you.
Lastly, if you ever need to see examples of fat brides, look no further than this blog here! Our #fat brides hashtag is full of fat and happy brides. You can also check out prettypearbride's Tumblr page. It's full of nothing but plus size brides and run by a plus size woman of color! She also has an IG page with even more pictures and stories. We here @gloriousfatpoc wish you all the best for your upcoming nuptials. You are worthy of being with your partner. They chose you and you chose them. May happiness, collaboration and patience be the main themes in your marrige.
P.S. If you can go to another bridal boutique, please do. If not, make sure that as soon as the wedding is over you leave a review so scathing your fingers are smoking at the end lol.
Be well!
