Fateful Encounters
@thefallenprincessoflucis
“Shit shit shit...” Nyx was rushing through the streets seeing his destination. Why did the power have to go out on this day?
“Late again?” The guard at the gate scanned his idea smirking.
“Can it Al...power grid acting up again.” Nyx sighed.
“You should move.” Al laughed watching the glaive rush through the gate.
“You should move...” Nyx mimicked as he ran forward again. Drautos was going to kill him again for being late. Especially when he was supposed to getting a new duty.
He skidded to a halt seeing the courtyard door open. It would be faster to cut through. He wasn’t supposed to but...
“Desperate times...” He slipped inside quickly keeping his head down as he made his way across the pristine looking area. Oh the rich and royalty never spared any expense.

“Please?”
“No, Eclipsa.”
“Pleeeeeeaaaaassse?”
“I said no! It’s not safe.”
For a moment, it seemed as if that was the end of the conversation. Eclipsa folded her arms and pouted, watching her mother make last minute preparations for the talk with the monsters. Then an idea occured to her. Smiling again, Eclipsa bolted toward her toy chest and withdrew a small, wooden sword.
“I can defend myself!” she proclaimed, holding the sword high in the air. “Just like you mommy! If any monsters mess with me, I’ll just...” She swished her sword around a few times to illustrate her planned solution to such an encounter. This did get a smile out of her mother (it usually did), but it was a short-lived one this time.
“Darling, I know you’re my little warrior, but this isn’t a battle. We’re just...talking with them” she explained, rolling her eyes at the last few words.
"If you’re just talking, why isn’t it safe?” Eclipsa asked, letting the hand holding her sword drop to her side. It seemed like a perfectly reasonable question to her, but for some reason, it seemed to frustrate her mother.
“Because they’re monsters, Eclipsa, they don’t talk, they fight. They kill. You can’t reason with them.”
“Theeeeen, why are you talking to them?”
“Because that’s the way things are done" Solaria sighed, glancing off to the side. “But maybe that will change soon” she muttered, just before standing up. “Alright, I should be back later this afternoon.”
“Mommy, please, just let me—”
“No Eclipsa. You will stay in the castle where it’s safe until I return—that’s an order.” Eclipsa sighed. She knew there was no changing her mother’s mind when she got like this, so she tossed her sword aside and went to pout on the bed as Solaria left the room.
Eclipsa knew better than to try any of the usual exits; her mother probably put a magical barrier around them, just in case. But she didn’t need those exits to do what she wanted. Ever since she’d discovered her first passage way a little over a year ago, she’d been on the look out for the secrets of Butterfly Castle. She’d since found a second, and she was sure her mother didn’t know about that one. Once she was sure she was alone, Eclipsa grabbed cloak and fastened it around her neck. The dull gray cloth clashed horribly with pink and white dress, but Eclipsa didn’t care. This wasn’t a formal outing, this was just for her. If her mother wouldn’t let her go see the monsters, she’d make her own fun! After grabbing her trusted sword, Eclipsa head out through the passage way.
The passageway alone didn’t take her outside the castle; she still had to sneak past several guards before she was finally free to explore. She had little plan on where to go, so the young princess followed her instincts, ducking in and out of alley ways and making her way through the city.
After a while, she found herself somewhere she’d never been before: some kind of forest. Or maybe it was a bog? It sure smelled like a bog the farther she got into it. It was fun at first, but the deeper she traveled into the wooded area, the more uneasy she started to get. Maybe it was time to go back.
Unfortunately, she didn’t know how to do that.
Eclipsa tried to retrace her steps, but it only seemed to get her more lost. Little by little, she started to get more uneasy, small sounds making her jump, only to find they belonged to some sort of bird or rodent passing by. But then there was one sound she couldn’t identify— a loud rusting in the bushes along the path. Eclipsa stopped in her tracks, looking around and listening to see ifshe heard it again. And when she did, she immediately pointed her sword in the general direction of the mysterious sound.
“Who’s there?" Eclipsa asked, trying to sound fearless like her mother. “Show yourself, fiend!”

Amazon Featured Book-of-the-Week: "FATEFUL ENCOUNTERS" by Richard Masters
Fate is a venerable concept out of fashion these days. It has been largely replaced by individual “free will.” The idea that Fate might rule our lives seems like an archaic notion, almost a superstition. But the people of the ancient world felt differently. The Greeks, for example, believed that Fate was an inexorable power that not even the gods themselves could oppose. The people in these…
