Why you should probably go outside before activating the Beta Capsule.
So, i've just finished watching Shin Ultraman for the first time, here's my thoughts. Let me start by saying that, similar to when i watched Shin Kamen Rider for the first time, i am at the present moment rather unfamiliar with the original 1966 series, or the rest of the franchise in general. This, however, hardly affected my enjoyment of the film. Much like Shin KR, it has the general feel of a mature, big budget adaptation of a classic hero, and does so without becoming an overly cynical or "edgy" attempt at deconstructing the character and setting that plagued American superhero films for a bit.
cough cough Zack Snyder cough cough
Ultimately, it truly shows how Ultraman's main theme is one of hope, even in the face of a vast, cold, and cruel Universe, and doesn't shy away from looking directly into the camera and saying "Yes, humans can be terrible to each other, but they are a wonderful and beautiful species capable of great kindness to not just each other, but to other life in their world and beyond, and they deserve the chance to evolve to be greater, so if you try to wipe them out, i'll shoot you with my laser hands and blow you up", and i love it for that.
The one thing i will say is that i wish it had made use of Practical suits and effects rather CGI Models and VFX for Ultraman and his opponents, but the models themselves are incredibly faithful to the OG suits from '66, down to mimicking a lot of the creases and folds the classic suit had, which i found very charming. So, all in all, the film was an 8.5/10 for me, pacing was a liiiittle slow for my taste, but this is a more subjective opinion rather than an objective criticisim, so, yeah.

I always think it’s sweet how Ichimonji Hayato always tries to make people comfortable around him and one of those ways is telling people they don’t need to be formal with him
The angelic Minami Hamabe as Ruriko Midorikawa in Shin Kamen Rider (2023).
Looking forward to her return as Noriko in Godzilla Minus Zero (2026).
Okay… I decided to watch Shin Kamen Rider (2023) movie and Im 3 mins in and Im baffled how brutal this is. Ive been swearing holy shit and what fuck the whole time there was a fight.
I havent watched any Show Era kamen rider (except first ep1 of Kamen Rider 1971). Only fully watched Heisei Era Part 1… this moviebis going to directions that I have no idea its going…
My read is, that's to put the audience in the same headspace as Hongo, who's horrified by what he's capable of now.
I just finished Shin Kamen Rider (2023) movie… I cried... alot... I never expected anything nor managed to see through plot because this movie decided to screw me side ways and starts making me cry at the sheer decisions it makes.
Overall—I love it. There are some scenes that doesnt impact nor makes sense to me and I think that's mostly because of movie run time hence no time to expand to have more of a emotional impact.
Wont be rating it since my feelungs are too complicated for a number to measure
5 years ago today, Shunsuke Kikuchi, the original composer of Kamen Rider 1971 TV series, passed away at the age of 89 from aspiration pneumonia....
Rest in Peace to Shunsuke Kikuchi (1931-2021)
