By some random chance (not really sure how), Mahiru stumbles upon childhood photos of Nagito from the holiday he went on at San Cristobal with his parents. And she's struck by just how very happy kid Nagito looked during that brief time. Looking back through all the photos she's taken over the last two years they've all been a class, she realizes that Nagito's smiles in the few she has of him feel so hollow and forced by comparison.
