Gladion's name is so fascinating.

First it's connected to Lillie's name more than I expected.

His name is based on Gladiolus, a genus of flowering plant from iridaceae family. And if you look on Gladiolus description on Wikipedia...

And Lillie's name is a German translation of lily. Like, it's literally just a tougher version of Lillie's name. For me it's like he's already named to protect Lillie when she's definitely wasn't even born yet. Damn Lusamine knows how to name her children.

AND HIS PARTNER IS TYPE: NULL WHICH WAS CONSTRUCTED TO SYNTHESIZE THE GIVEN CELLS TAKEN FROM POKEMON TYPES TO MIMIC ARCEUS'S ABILITY. LIKE GOD DAMN IT GAME FREAK YOU KNOW HOW TO NAME YOUR CHARACTERS.

Pokeaniweek Day 4

Favorite Rival?

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…

I think I found Drew though Youtube AMVs that featured both Contestshipping and Pokeshipping. Alternatively I may have caught a rerun of “Win, Lose or Drew” on t.v. It was probably both.

Who was this smirking child, flicking his hair and tossing roses around like it’s his job? What is this ship with a clueless girl and an in denial boy? Why did I stop watching Pokemon and where can I catch up right now?!?!?!

I was a girl possessed. I made a list of every episode with an appearance and tracked them all down on YouTube and recorded then whenever they came on t.v. I didn’t just change every screen in my life to a picture of him. I physically printed out pictures to put in my room.

(I’ve kept the list. For 10 years now.)

I guess what really drew me (ha) to him was his attitude, and how much of it was bravado. He was very similar to Gary, but in a way that was much funnier and much dorkier…which was actually a plus. 

Even still, with as smug as he was, he was a good dude. Like, the line “I have no idea what’s going on, but happy to help!” And I just…ahhh. He is so sure of himself and yet…it’s very obviously only on the outside. Harley is so good at rattling him, at least when he uses May to do it.

Don’t even get me started on his interactions with May and Harley. I actually, until very recently, hated May. The only thing that made me interact with her character was Drew. It felt like if I wanted him, she was a given (and in canon, she was). Plus his rivalry/eventual friendship/oh my god be more in love children was, in my opinion one of the most entertaining and engaging relationships in the series. 

I’m rambling now...and I’ve just used gifs I like, not ones that are relevant lol. I just…I love him so much. He’s dramatic, and tries to be cool but fails spectacularly, unless he’s on stage. He’s such a performer (stay tuned for my take on Drew’s take on Performances). May totally baffles him and I love that. He’s got so much snark hidden in that grass head. *sigh*

So here’s to Drew, my favorite Pokemon Rival, and my first anime boyfriend.

Day Four!  Favorite Rival- PAUL/Shinji

This boy. This Edgy Purple Son of a Gun. I LIVED for this boy when Diamond and Pearl first aired. I would skip over filler episodes and Dawn centric episodes (and I loved Dawn!) so I could watch this piece of shit DESTROY Ash. The fact that he was so vicious and absolutely hated Ash made me want to watch every battle he was in. He was so different from any rival we had before and we’ve never gotten one like him since.

None of his other rivals even come close to the level Paul was at. Paul actually got to Ash. His team was so badass (no matter how much he switched out). It took Ash the ENTIRE DP series to finally beat this boy. Like, it took years before we finally got to see Paul actually respect Ash as a trainer and vice versa. Sure, the other rivals annoyed him, but Paul drove Ash nuts. Like, I never really realized just how much until I re-watched DP and saw how Ash acted toward Gary versus how he acted toward Paul.

This boy wanted Ash dead. He was ready to kill. He will always be my favorite rival and I hope Pokémon brings him back someday. #Pathetic

Yyyyeah! Classic!Silver! And he’s in grayscale because why not. Silver is my favorite rival, for sure. Though, to be fair, that’s mostly because of nostalgia as Pokemon Crystal was my first video game period, so I have a fondness for all things in that game. Also, I really liked long hair Silver, a bit sad he got shorter hair in the hgss. VERY sad Kris got replaced with Lyra in the remakes, but there’s not really anything I can do about that. I draw a lot of pokemon actually, I just don’t put most of it up on tumblr. I need to put more pokemon up tbh I don’t put up enough.

My Favorite Rival

" Silver "

To me, Silver is one of the more interesting rivals. His dad is Giovanni, head of the organization 'Team Rocket'. The same man who disappeared and was said to have committed suicide.

Being the head of such a large crime syndicate, it brings the image up that he wasn't around a lot for most of Silver's life. Then, suddenly, the boy's father is gone.

Even if Giovanni was a shitty father, he was a father to Silver nonetheless. So, therefore, Silver's hatred for Team Rocket stems from the fact that the organization took Giovanni away from him and eventually stole him away permanently.

This angsty backstory is why Silver is my favorite rival, with Gary coming in 2nd place of course. All the redhead wants to do is get revenge on the organization that stole from him.
