Mariane has such a strong gothic protagonist thing going on with her... she's extremely attached to her father. He was also the person who majorly contributed to to her low esteem. Isolating his daughter, making her afraid of herself, to the point she's unable to interact with other people or even have an idea of her future. Arguably at least her uncle's adoption is somewhat preparing her for a public political future but he raises her for his own political interest too. Marianne shall succeed politically but she's still emotionally neglected, incredibly self-loathing, still taught to self-isolate in the monastery. In return, Marianne turns to faith but in order to beg for abdication of her own self, instead of finding comfort or purpose.
Damn, if there couldn't be an exciting gothic plot fic be written about her life.
