the number of times I've typed Sylveon while trying to write Sylvain is too damn high
petrichor (noun): pe·tri·chor ˈpe-trə-ˌkȯr
: a distinctive, earthy, usually pleasant odor that is associated with rainfall especially when following a warm, dry period
dimitri meets edelgard before the final battle to lay his memories of her to rest.
"Why does it matter that she didn't wield the blade that took the life of the Kingdom's beloved shield?" The fallen monarch's ears ring with the thoughts of those who can no longer think. The ideals of those who have no voice for which to share them with. "Why does it matter that she wasn't the villain who murdered the king of this nearly-forgotten land?"
The number of WTFs I have to say internally about Jeralt sometimes just kind of makes me go "Okay, this guy really can't be trusted to raise Byleth and is definitely not the most reliable narrator." Badumtish.
But seriously...
He nearly killed Alois in a drunk accident and Alois was too kind to give it genuine concern until Leonie where he had to question if it was intentional. He has a serious drinking problem and Alois is handling the man's debts. He runs on the Monastery using the fire as an escape when there were people who could have needed him during and after the fire.
Look, I'm just gonna say Jeralt is underselling it when he says leaving the Monastery was a mistake. I've got skeletons in the closet in store when it comes to him in Unifying Twilight. If nothing else, while Seiros was beating herself up over thinking she failed him, Aelfric is going to seriously chew the guy out for a number of reasons, including what he put Seiros, Alois, and Aelfric through. ...And especially Byleth.
Cindered Shadows feels... awkwardly written, almost rushed through production? But I definitely have ideas to build up. Actually, I've got up to the first major clash written, it was a dirty, messy fight.
Well, for Aelfric, for starters, the plot really doesn't need to be some secret scheme Aelfric has been orchestrating for years. Making it premeditated feels weird. It makes so much more sense for Aelfric's actions to just be the fall out of things already being built up.
Aelfric may have been the villain (and I feel like the writing is trying to put in a lot of heavy lifting to force it), but he's also a main struggling with grief in a way that... strangely parallels Jeralt such that he asks the same questions that Jeralt acted upon. And Rhea regards him as she does Sitri—as her own child.
...And Byleth doesn't know if their father is really their father.
...Questions for Later!
Haah, what do I even have to say about Aelfric that won't get deep into Book 2 Spoiler territory?
I can probably say that he's pissed with Jeralt in part because nobody else is pissed enough. He's honest about having build Abyss to be this home and restoration project. Considering he's built Abyss into what it is today—a place that is much healthier overall than it could be despite being a place of poverty—I'd say he's pretty important to the Abyss Project to the point where it'd actually be a critical blow to Abyss if they lose him. Without someone to facilitate organization and direction, it can be hard for people to do it on their own, and Yuri and the others are not experts on the matter. So I'm keeping his goodwill as genuine.
That being said, he sees Jeralt as a problem more than others do. Jeralt's abandonment was like, shattering the illusion that he was a good man in Aelfric's eyes. Because Aelfric idolized him too, as he says. However things happened, it was a major fallout. And it wouldn't be hard to think Aelfric has stopped seeing Jeralt as good at all, or at the very least, he made incredible blunders out of his own desperation and grief. And yes, the irony is not lost.
...Seriously, it's like Aelfric is built to be a second Jeralt.
My Left Brain, making a whole story told from Seiros's POV who was actually there: "Am I glazing Seiros too hard by writing her as innocent and well intentioned during the birth of Byleth?"
My Right Brain: "My child of the Goddess, there are people in the fandom who let themselves believe Seiros only wanted to resurrect Sothis when she saved a baby's life at the express behest of her daughter with a Crest Stone that couldn't possibly fit in a human baby's body without somehow being shrunken down in advance. The woman's an open heart surgeon. Write the fucking fic and don't give a fucc."
Edit: This is having a knock on effect of making me realize some of the worse behaviors of certain characters. Once I stop assuming guilt out of a single target, I have to reanalyze what I know of so many other persons.

Summary:
Edelgard is rising, the leader of her army, and her late class has to choose where they stand. All of it sounds like an incredible play - unfortunately, it is not a character Dorothea has to play, but her real life.
