Bird safety alert for NORTH AMERICA:

Coming from a feather collector; please avoid picking up any bird feathers you find on the ground until the bird flu thing is over. Its typically a very safe hobby, but flare ups of bird flu mean no picking up feathers.

If you absolutely MUST have that sweet-ass belted kingfisher retrice, wear gloves when retrieving it, and clean in warm soapy water ASAP. Bird feathers are naturally hydrophobic, so be sure to take your time and clean in between the barbs on the underside.

But seriously, the bird flu isn't just limited to chickens. Wild birds are the primary vector.

Bird feathers I found the other day.

I love birds of all kinds and just started collecting their feathers. Two of these are blue herring but we can’t be sure on the other/ road runner perhaps?

When I go on walks with Doris I tend to come home with Treasures and my apartment is developing somewhat of a “disorganized nature museum” look

Reminder that the majority of bird remains are illegal to keep in the USA, including the bones, feathers, eggs and nests of many species! They’re protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA).

You should also check local laws, the MBTA is federal (applies to every state), but each state and county can have other laws in addition to the MBTA.
